Reflections for Sergeant Kevin Scott Kight
Kevin,
My wife and I have just returned from Panama City Beach where we stayed in the Edgewater Resort. While walking I saw the marker beside the street out front and realized what it meant. I later talked with two officers there and was told of the events of the night of your death. One officer had been two blocks away that night and had worked the same shift with you. I could see and feel the hurt and pain he felt as he spoke of you. He showed me the emblem on the patrol cars with the 18 and a kite to remember you by. May you rest in peace and may God continue to be with your family and the department with which you served.

I ran accross the subject Bailey, Robert WM while preparing a course outline for my juvenile offenders and determined that he must have been sentence to death for a LEO. And, sure enough I found Kevin's biographical sketch. I am using this incident in an effort to teach criminal thinking and the ultimate nefarious outcomes that occur as a result of a life of crime. May be I'll be able to save one officer's life by teaching this course in behalf of Sergeant Kight. And, brothers this heartache that I feel as I read this obituary is as real today as it was when I was on-duty in Miami-Dade County and 35 officers died in the line-of-duty during my tour-of-duty. God Bless and keep up the Good Fight.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I was thinking about you today, I don't know why.
I came to this site. I used to check this site daily. Now,......not so often. I find that it hurts to much. The most vivid memory I have was of your son, I'm sorry I don't remember his name. During your funeral there wasn't room in the church for all of us. We stood in formation just as it started to rain. Your boy came down the rows of hundreds of cops and shook everyone's hand. He was wearing a gunbelt with a plastic gun and plastic handcuffs. By the the time he made it to me he had so many badges and pins stuck to his shirt that it was weighing him down. I took off my ribbons to pin them on his shirt, but I could barely find room. After I pinned them on his shirt I told him how I met his Daddy when he came to Osceola to help us after Hurricane Charlie. He smiled and stuck out his hand. I shook his hand. He said, "I gotta go now." What a strong young man.

It has been over two years now Kevin. I still miss you every day. I miss your laughter and cheer and jokes. The hardest part was the trial but we all made it through and your killer was convicted and sentenced to death after two years. It was a relief to know what he faces, but it does not sooth the much of the anger knowing that you will never walk with us again. Still, I know you are with us each time I hear certain songs at the right times, or get a flat on my patrol truck at inconvenient times or trip over my dog, I hear your laughter. Brandon is growing quick and is a beautiful boy. I know you are proud. Watch over us brother and know that you are not forgotten.
with love, laughter and light, until we meet again,

Kevin, Christina, and Brandon;
Two years have gone by today, it is still hard to believe that you are no longer on patrol. I can not say that you are not here, because we all know you are still with us all in your own special way. Not long after I returned to DC from your funeral, I was accepted to the Motor Unit with my new agecy. To my surprise, and honor, I was given the number 18... just the number that my seniority and order on the unit came. My wife and I recently had a baby girl that we name Gracie Madison. She was born 1/8/07, and the first song we heard on the radio leaving the hospital with her was "Long Black Train", the same song that was sang at your memorial service, and has stayed with me for two years now. Those are just two examples of how I know you are still with us, and two of many reasons I will never forget you! With Police Week coming up fast, I look foreward to honring your memory along with all of the other brave heroes who gave their lives for the better good of man. May God bless you and your family, and just know you are still in our minds, in our hearts, and will never be forgotten! Thank you for being my hero! I miss you Kevin.

The sign on the wall says In valor there is hope. It reflects the courage of Police Officers like Sgt. Kight. This incident occurred while I was vacationing in Florida with my family. Because of the bravery of Sgt. Kight, and many others, we were able to enjoy our time in his state and feel safe. He was obviously a great street cop and an outstanding person. I only hope that all who knew him can go on knowing how fortunate they were to have had him in their lives. Rest In Peace Sergeant.
