Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Harry Mannon
IN HONORE CASORUM
The promise... Always honored, never forgotten.

To Harry Mannon
No Bard will tell the story
Of his fearless life and death—
Of the call to duty answered
By his lips with closing breath.
But, when the soul of Mannon
Took its flight from earth today.
From the fields of restless toil
A true MAN was borne away.
In the hearts and in the souls
Of his friends his story’s told,
Any they prize the heritage
More than Nevada’s gold.
For the gold that lies hidden
In the vaults of earth and rock
With the wreck of earth will pass—
But the soul survives the shock
When the Book of Life is read
In the light of Heaven’s day
There’ll be a page for Harry—
The bards have naught to say.
—H.W. Knickerbocker, Tonopah Bonanza, April 16, 1905
Harry Mannon was deputized by my great-grandfather, Nye County Sheriff Tom Logan, in early 1905. Age 33 and newly married, Mannon was an affable miner from California. He was dispatched 85 miles south of Tonopah, NV, in response to increasing disturbances in the Bullfrog district. The day after he arrived, he got on the trail of two highwaymen who had held up five workers in a wood camp. During an altercation with the fugitives, Mannon was mortally wounded. For days a posse scoured the countryside looking for his assailant while the young deputy fought to stay alive. On the morning of April 5, 1905, exactly one year before Sheriff Logan would also be killed in the line of duty, Deputy Harry Mannon died. His killer, Frank Crouch, was never caught.
