"THE FINAL INSECTION"

THE TROOPER STOOD BEFORE HIS GOD,
WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS.
HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING.
JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS.

"STEP FORWARD NOW, TROOPER.
HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU?
HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK?
TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE TROOPER SQUARED HIS SHOULDERS AND SAID,
"NO, LORD, I GUESS I AIN'T,
BECAUSE THOSE OF US WHO CARRY A BADGE
CANT ALWAYS BE A SAINT.

I'VE HAD TO WORK MOST SUNDAYS,
AND AT TIMES MY TALK WAS ROUGH,
AND SOMETIMES I'VE BEEN VIOLENT,
BECAUSE THE STREETS ARE AWFULLY TOUGH.

BUT I NEVER TOOK A PENNY,
THAT WASNT MINE TO KEEP...
THOUGH I WORKED A LOT OF OVERTIME
WHEN THE BILLS GOT TO STEEP.

AND I NEVER PASSED A CRY FOR HELP,
THOUGH AT TIMES I SHOOK WITH FEAR.
AND SOMETIMES, LORD FORGIVE ME,
I WEPT UNMANLY TEARS.

I KNOW I DONT DESERVE A PLACE
AMONG THESE PEOPLE HERE.
THEY NEVER WANTED ME AROUND
EXCEPT TO CALM THEIR FEARS.

IF YOU'VE A PLACE FOR ME HERE, LORD,
IT NEEDN'T BE SO GRAND.
I NEVER EXPECTED OR HAD TO MUCH,
BUT IF YOU DON'T.. I'LL UNDERSTAND.

THERE WAS SILENCE ALL AROUND THE THRONE
WHERE SAINTS HAD ONCE TROD.
AS THE TROOPER WAITED QUIETLY,
FOR THE JUDGEMENT OF HIS GOD.

"STEP FORWARD NOW, TROOPER,
YOU'VE BORNE YOUR BURDENS WELL.
COME WALK A BEAT ON HEAVEN'S STREET,
YOU'VE DONE YOUR TIME IN HELL."

REST IN PEACE, BROTHER.

Our thoughts and our prayers are with our fallen brother. I hope that the citizens of Southeast Missouri come together in a show of support for the Sgt. Carl Dewayne Graham family and for the Missouri State Highway Patrol. As a former Southeast Missourian, I am thankful for Sgt. Graham’s work and will be eternally grateful for the ultimate sacrifice he made to protect and to serve all of us. It is not how this officer died that made him a hero, it is how he lived. May God bless and be with this family during this time of sorrow.
