Reflections for Police Officer Daniel Robert Boyle

Never Forgotten

Danny: We never had the pleasure of knowing you but how proud you must be of your Dad. The work he has accomplished and the good he continues to display assisting needy children to get a good Catholic education is in itself a remarkable task. Danny you died protecting the streets of your hometown; Man hath no greater love than when he gives up life for his friends.

You will never be forgot!
Love,
Sue & Mike

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Danny,
there isn't a day that goes by that i don't think about you. i wear your badge every day and every time i put it on it reminds me that you made that you made ultimate sacrifice for me and rest of the citizens of Philadelphia. its hard to believe that God could do such a thing as to take such a good person out of our lives, i guess he wanted you all to himself. thank you so much, you will never be forgotten and you will always be missed.

I recall going to mass and your funeral. One of many over the years. But it is THE ONE that stays in my mind and fills my eyes with tears when I talk about it. I recall the firing party and taps being played. Then that wonderful voice singing "Danny Boy." That brought me to tears. I met a woman at a WaWa a few years back wearing YOUR jacket and I mentioned attending your funeral. Then she told me she is your mother. A very fine lady. Rest in peace brother. Your family and friends have not forgotten you. Even some strangers have not forgotten you.

OFFICER BOYLE-

I NEVER KNEW YOU. HOWEVER, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET YOUR MOTHER TODAY. SHE SHARED YOUR STORY WITH MYSELF AND ANOTHER FELLOW OFFICER. WE WERE BOTH MOVED BY HER WORDS SHE HAD TO SAY ABOUT YOU. SHE REALLY MISSES YOU. THE REFLECTIONS LEFT BY YOUR FRIENDS AND CO-WORKERS ARE TOUCHING AS WELL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF PHILADELPHIA.

17 years on, and 16 years without you. You would think it would get easier, but it doesn't. I saw Bannons reflection and remembered "Hollywood" and laughed outloud. I miss you brother.

Danny,
Hard to believe it's 16 years since you were taken from us. We always looked forward to seeing you pull into the academy just before classes started. You could always be counted on to liven up an otherwise boring class.

I was a young Maryland State Trooper at the time of Officer Boyle's death. I am a Philadelphia native and was home visiting my family when I was told by my father of officer boyle's murder. I did not know this officer but every time I conducted a traffic stop I thought of him for some reason. He is remembered and I thank him for keeping me alert and safe in spirit.

Danny:

I was honored to be present at your plaque dedication today, 5-3-2006. You have a community park named for you now and it was a wonderful ceremony. Your squad was there and some of the children your scholarship fund benefitted were there too. You are always a member of the family.

I remember the gulf war was at its height during your death, but when I got my philly inquirer that day in 10th grade study hall, I automatically read all the wonderful articles about you for days to come and everything else was almost second in nature.
