MASTER DEPUTY J. T. OWENS
ANDERSON COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE SC
March 15, 2005
Our son, Sgt. Jeff Hewitt now has another one of our finest to walk the streets of Heaven with him. Jeff was a deputy for the Buncombe County , N.C. Sheriffs' Dept. He lost his life 04/04/04 while serving a commitment warrant.
Each time we learn of another fallen brother, our hearts are filled with pain. We were not priviledged to know Alex but we have already heard so much about him and know God chose him because he had a special assignment for him.
Our prayers go out to his family. We know the pain you're feeling and we want you to know you'll always be included in our prayers. You will not be alone. The emotional support we are still receiving from the Sheriffs' dept. is unparalleled to anything we've ever experienced. As we prepare to travel to Washington D.C. to honor Jeff as his name is placed on the ODMemorial Wall and attend the Memorial Services, you will be on our minds and in our hearts. God bless you and keep you in his care always.

First, I have to say thank you for all your prayers.
I worked with Alex for his 4 years at our office and he was always tried to be the best Deputy he could be. Always went out of his way to help someone in need as he did the night he died. He was recently promoted to Investigator and would have started that position in May.
We learned last night that a father of 3 in SC recieved a kidney from Alex. Now hes even helping people after his death. God bless you Alex and watch over your brothers here. We will miss you.

“When God made Peace Officers….”
When the lord was creating Peace Officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”
And the Lord said, Have you read the spec on this order? A Peace Officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn’t touch, and not wrinkle their uniform.
They have to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day.
They have to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half- eaten meals. And they have to have six pairs of hands.
The angel shook her head slowly and said, “Six pairs of hands….No Way.”
“It’s not the hands that are causing me the problems,” said the Lord, “It’s the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have.”
That’s on the standard model? asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, “May I see what’s in there sir?” (When they already know and wishes they had taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of their head for their partners’ safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, “ You’ll be alright ma’am, when they know it isn’t so.”
“Lord,” said the angel, touching his sleeve,” rest and work tomorrow.”
“I can’t,” said the Lord, “I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on civil service paycheck.”
The angel circled the model of the Peace Officer very slowly, “Can it think?” she asked.
“You bet,” said the Lord, “It can tell you elements of a hundred crimes, recite Miranda warnings in it’s sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five judges to debate the legality of the stop…and still it keeps it’s sense of humor.
This officer also has phenomenal personal control. They can deal with crime scenes painted in HELL, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim’s family’ and then read in the daily paper how Law Enforcement isn’t sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects.
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Peace Officer. “There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model.”
“That’s not a leak,” said the Lord, “It’s a tear.”
“What’s the tear for?” asked the angel.
“It’s for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, and for justice.”
“You’re a genius,” said the angel.
The Lord looked sober. “I didn’t put it there,” he said.

To the family, friends and co-workers my prayers are with you. The one thing that I kept thinking about was how much Clint loved being a police officer. The last time I saw Clint he said that he had his perfect job. I bet Alex loved his job also, by just reading his memorial he stopped to help direct traffic so no one else would get hurt. Deputy Burdette you are a true hero, your family will miss you everyday, but we will never forget you.
Look Clint up for me tell him I love him and miss him.

Rest in peace, brother. Your time here may have been short, but it was not without a lifetime's worth of honor.
Your service and the sacrifice you made have immortalized you as a true hero- a warrior of justice who was chosen to serve in Paradise with all of those who have gone "above and beyond" in their actions here.
As you take your post, keep watch over your family and all of those who had the privelege of knowing you. Help them to find strength in one another and in the law enforcement community so that they may forge ahead in your absence. Let them find solace in knowing that they were a part of you and you will forever be a part of them. We will keep your wife and little girls in our prayers.
May you find eternal peace now- Godspeed!
