Reflections for Sergeant Hoyt Keith Teasley
Those we love
are never really lost to us -
we feel them
in so many special ways- through friends they always cared about and dreams they left behind,in beauty that they added to our days...in words of wisdom we still carry with us and memories that never will be gone...
Those we love are never really lost to us - For everywhere their special love lives on.

As a resident of Georgia, it was with absolute horror watching what unfolded in downtown Atlanta Friday morning. Hearing that a judge and his court reporter had been coldly gunned down was difficult enough to bear. When I heard you had died in the ER at Grady, I knew right away that you were not wearing a vest, why would you, your job was supposedly safer than on the streets. Alone, you pursued this perpetrator out of the courthouse and onto the street. You knew what the outcome might be but you did it anyway. You did not hesitate, you did not falter. You did not do your job, you went over and above what could have been expected of you. Your wife, your kids, your parents, your siblings, none had a chance to say goodbye, to share final moments with you, to hold you one final time, to kiss you goodbye. How brave you were, how unselfish. How many other lives did you save by losing yours? The world is a little bit safer today because of the sacrifice you made. Eleven years ago, a very dear friend was gunned down when he made a routine traffic stop, I miss him as much now as I did the day he passed. It is always senseless, we are always left wondering why, we are always left with our anger and our tears. Another officer down, why? You will never be forgotten, God will hold you gently in his arms. God will smile on your family and you will always watch over them until you once again meet. Rest in peace, your job is done, you served us well, your watch has ended. We will miss you.

Saint Michael, heaven's glorious commissioner of police, who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premisesof all its undesirables, look with kindly and professionaleyes on your earthly force.
Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for investigation and wise judgment.
Make us the terror of burglars, the friend of children and law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores, strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.
You know, Saint Michael, from your own experiences with the devil, that the police officer's lot on earth is not always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the devil, and your angelic self-control give us inspiration.
And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your heavenly force, where we will be as proud to guard the throne of God as we have been to guard the city of all the people. Amen.

Rest in peace, brother. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. It is a true hero who lays down his life for others, and you are no exception. Though words alone cannot take away the pain your family, friends community and nation are feeling as a result of your passing, may the sentiments left on these pages be a testament to the many lives you have impacted. May this bring some comfort to those closest to you, to know that they are not grieving alone.
Take your post in Heaven with pride and honor, for you have truly earned it. Pass the sword and the warriors of justice left to fight here will carry it in your memory.
Godspeed!

"A Part of America Died "
Somebody killed a policeman today and
a part of America died
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long lonely nights
The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
Just as if he had gone off to war
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast
To his name they will add a gold star
Yep, somebody killed a policeman today
In your town or mine
While we sleep in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop puts his life on the line
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookies' side
He answered the call of himself gave his all
And a part of America died

To the wife, children and family of Sgt. Hoyt Teasley,
My thought and prayers are with you and your family. I hope you can take comfort in knowing he will be missed by many. Without knowing Sgt. Teasley I feel I know what kind of a man he was. It takes a very special person to do the job he did, to put others safety above his own. I lost my husband in the line of duty on February 27,2005. Mark, always told me police work was something he felt driven to do, it was most likely the same for your husband.
While we struggle to come to terms with the loss of a husband, father and son, please be assured you and your family will also be in our thoughts. Take comfort in knowing he has a special place in heaven and my husband was waiting there to welcome him home. We now have another guardian angel watching over us.
