A tear was shed today
for someone I did not know
a tear was shed today
but there's so much pain that we don't show
A tear was shed today
as the cars all followed
a tear was shed today
while the sirens wailed in sorrow
A tear was shed today
while the bugle played so slow
a tear was shed today
while we hung our heads so low
A tear was shed today
as the flag was folded straight
a tear was shed today
how could this have been someone's fate?
A tear was shed this rainy day
for a fallen hero,
oh it didn't have to be this way
a tear was shed today
And there's only one thing I ask
a tear was shed today
oh please Lord let it be the last

My heart is aching for the family you leave behind. I know the pain as we lost our son in June 2002. Seems hardly possible to be almost three years ago.
Your family will miss you more as time goes by, but I pray they will find strength and peace leaning on the Lord.
Thank you for your service to the citizens of South Carolina. We honor you and your dedication. Now rest in peace.

THE MORNING THE ANGELS CAME TO HARDEEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.......
While some of us were home in the comfort of our beds Cpl. Mark Jones was working instead. While working his shift through the night the Angels came and took him out of sight.

TO: The family; loved ones; friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER’S PRAYER:--- O, gentle Lord ! Keep the day/night watch with me. As I begin my tour of duty, I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work, endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent upon me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think no one really cares and that I am taken for granted. Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence. Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord, I ask that I may return safely, after my tour of duty, to my loved ones and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer; and after my tour of duty is over here on earth, may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well. AMEN. *** REST IN PEACE *** Sent to you by the father of Detective J.D.Koeppen, Raleigh North Carolina; Trooper D.C.Koeppen, New Jersey State Police and Patrolman A.M.Koeppen, Wilmington North Carolina.

Mark, I will miss hearing your voice on the radio. I can't even bring myself to put my radio on scan. It feels like something is missing. I really wish I would have waited till you got to the jail Thursday night. At least I would have had the chance to speak face to face one more time. You were loved by many Mark. Like we used to say on the phone "Why don't you run one my way" Look out for all of us. We love you brother.
