Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Haven Blake Gammill

Blake, It was an honor to serve with you and a joy to have you as a friend.
I will miss you buddy and I will never forget you.

When I heard the tragic news on Friday morning, I prayed that it was not an office that I knew. I did a criminal justice internship with the DCSO back in 2001. I had the privilege of riding with Blake on several occasions. If anyone asked me describe a police office, Blake would be it. He was smart, quick, extremely dedicated, and every other attribute one would expect to see in a police officer. He was also funny with a great sense of humor. I remember him talking about the impending birth of his first child. We talked about motorcycles and going to Daytona. He was a GOOD man. I haven't seen him since I finished my internship. Every one of the DC deputies that I rode with were wonderful, dedicated people. There was just something special about Blake, and I will never forget the man that I knew. Even though I didn't know him well, he touched my heart.

I pray for his children, his fiance, his family, and his co-workers. I know he is in a better place, but he sure will be missed here on Earth.

God bless you Blake. I hope to see you again one day.

Mrs. Gammill,

I’m so sorry for another family to go through this tragedy. We share such similar stories. My husband was shot and killed during an ambush almost 3 weeks ago, Deputy Wayne Koester from the Lake County Sheriffs Office here in Florida. My heart goes out to you and your family. The first week I could barely look at this site, it’s heartbreaking to read how much your husband is loved and thought of by so many people, many that you don’t even know. As more time past, I was able to read all of the reflections, though I must admit I cried through everyone of them. This site is not to cause pain, but to Honor our husbands for their bravery and self-sacrifice. For doing the job so few people are able to do or have the courage to do it with. You are and will always be a part of the law enforcement family. Don’t be afraid to call your friends, co-workers or family when you don’t feet like getting out of bed. Let them help you. That is your support. Your children are your strength. They are where you will find the strength to continue moving forward. Children are remarkable. Love them and cherish them. They are gifts from above. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Take care of yourself and them. Your husband wouldn’t want it any other way. Always remember he is in your heart when you need to talk to him.

As a retired officer I am thankful that young people such as you continue to serve and protect the rest of us. I didn't know you personally, Deputy Gammill, but feel certain we will meet in Heaven. May God Bless your family, friends and co-workers. It is not this horrible and tragic death that made Blake a hero. It is how RICHLY he lived his life.

First off I want to say how very sorry I am for Blake's family, I know you are experiencing a horrible loss right now. I am sure that his fiancee' Dawn is struggling, and I wish her the best I hope she finds the strength to pull through this unbelieveable loss.
Blake --- you were the greatest, you always had a smile on your face and everytime I talked to you on the phone or the radio you were the sweetest person. I know that you are truly missed by everyone, but you are in a better place now watching out over us. I am sure that all of us will be taken care of by 591, and I know that makes me feel better. Thank you so much for the job that you did, you were an asset to the Sheriff's Department. I am speaking for Douglas County 911 as well as myself, you are one awesome person and we are truly missing you already! One day we will all meet again, and we will see your smiling face again. Rest in Peace Blake, we all miss you VERY much!

Blake,
As I write this I try hard to take solace in knowing you gave your life doing what you loved, but it's hard to take comfort in anything when a beloved officer has fallen. I will always remember you as one of the most dedicated deputies I had the pleasure to know and work with. Your work ethic was unequaled. You touched so many lives in the thirty years you walked among us. I know you now walk in heaven watching over those you left behind. You may be gone, but will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Blake.

Blake, I knew when I was trining you duing your your first days on the streets, that you were going to be a find Deputy. I told you one morning that I was not much of a traffic cop but still I had to show you how to preform a stop and to fill out a citation, and before the stop was done you had to show me how to fill the citation out. You asked me "how long have you had that damm ticket book"! and I said awhile why? and you said "Because it dont look like the one Captain gave me" and you wrote the ticket out and said " how about I teach you how to wrght tickets. We became grate friends, we helped each other, went places togeather, fought togeather, and played a lot of horse shoes togeather at the G-8 we just about whipped everbody down in Savannah.Well we fought one more time togeather my friend I sorry I could not protect you this time, But I am very proud of you for you did protect the rest of the team. I love you Blake and I know you knew that because I told you so just be fore i sent you into that house and you told me the same as you told every one that was on the team that night.Blake I will never forget you and i know there will be times that you arnt on my mind but that will only be a short time cause a man of your caritor, inteligence, bravery, and love that you had for all your friends and family can never be forgottan long. I love you and i will see ya, when the good lord calls me home. Your daughters, Dawn, and your family will always be in my prayers. I am proud to be the man that was there for your first and your last call.and I will be even prouder when you are my F.T.O. when I get to Heaven. Good night my friend. "Big E".
