Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Haven Blake Gammill

Love and miss you always and forever......I know you know that....but I needed to say it

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Blake,
I can't believe it's been 2 years already it seems like just yesterday all this happend.I can still see it just like it was just yesterday,You and I talking a week before all this mess happend we were talking about your family and talking about your girls how much they were growing and how much every thing was going good and then I heard that you had been hit and you might not make it.I started praying right then and there.I asked god to wrap his arms around you and to make you better that way you could get back to work. And then that's when I found out that the lord called you home to be with him.I want you to know that there are a lot of people that looked up to you myself included. You have so many friends and family that miss you and love you dearly. There is not a day go by that I myself don't think about you and wish you were still here.I pray every day that the lord watch over your family and the family that you have at DCSO.But I know they have two angels watching over them.Take care my friend and god bless you.

hey buddy, just wanted to say that we miss you, your Mom got to lay a brick in your honor at the courthouse Thursday night. Victoria "helped" her put it in the ground. It breaks my heart to see the pain in your parents eyes. Please save some seats for all of us. You will never be forgotten.

2 years & tears still my eyes when I think about the night you left. My Dad is a Deputy at DCSO and I know that every night he goes 10-8, he has a Guardian Angel going 10-8 as well. Your truly missed more than words can say! Thank you for protecting our county and giving the ultimate sacrafice. You've truly touched my heart & had a huge impact on my respect for Law Enforcement. You a true hero & I will never forget you!

Continue to watch over my Dad & the rest of DCSO, they still miss you dearly! Haven & Jewel Grace are lucky to have a Daddy like you & know what a great man, father and hero you were!

Blake,
Its been two years ago today that you left us and it still feels like only days ago. Even after all this time it still breaks my heart when I see the decals on all of the cars throughout the county. I wish the people that have them could understand what that means to all of us. My family is doing well, and my dad is as mean as ever :) Mama really loves that pool thanks to you and your dad, even though it is too cold to swim right now. My baby sister is still in college, and she is so beautiful. I'm very proud of her. I finally met someone that can handle me. Her name is Stasi, and she is unlike anyone that I have ever known. She has your attitude. I can talk to her about you, and thats saying something because she is the only one outside of our family that I feel comfortable talking to. I really wish you could have met her, even though I'm sure that you know who she is by now. We have been through a lot at the department since you left, but we are still together and I attribute that to you watching over us. I hope that you are doing well, and please keep looking out for us. I just wanted to let you know that even two years later, your memory is still strong in our hearts. We all miss you more than words can describe. I love you brother, and I will see you again someday.
