Pat,
I just wanted to let you know that Brett became a police officer 2 months ago. You were so much alike. I remember you two hit it off so well. As I saw him in uniform, I broke down. WHY? This should of never happened to ANYONE.. expecially you. I always have you in my thoughts and will never forget you. I miss my friend.

As I get ready to run in the CPD Run to Remember, I know you are with me - laughing at my form - wondering about the shirt we'll be wearing (all 12 of us) - hoping I don't embarress myself. Just know I'm doing this for you so help this 61 year old body finish, please.
You are forever in my heart.
Love you!

Trent & Diana had dinner at our house Saturday and brought pictures from their wedding. Pictures of tears and happiness - pictures you should have been in - pictures of Austin dancing JUST LIKE YOU! - with Nugie at his side. Nugie spoke at the reception - acknowledging that you should have been up there - how much Diana reminds us of you - what a great guy Trent is. Your presents was felt by many.
Trent and Diana are truly a wonderful couple - you would be happy for the "b----".
But for me, it was oh so sad. This year of weddings (weddings I was happy to attend) was tough. Some days are harder than others, but the events where you should be are the worst. NO,the worst would not asked to be there myself. The fact that your friend have not forgotten me is my saving grace. They help me go on more than they will ever know. Thank you for having such good friends!!
Love you forever!!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I just want you to know how much your Mom loves and misses you especially at this time of year. We gave her a very special gift this year for Christmas in memory of you, a bench with a very heartwarming message: "If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane I'd walk up to Heaven and bring you home again." Your Mom called Bob to see this gift and he was very emotional also..so please know you are loved and missed by all!!!

Thinking of you and your loved ones during this holiday season. Continue to keep watch over them. I have the outside of my home decorated in all blue lights, one of them is lit every night in your honor as my way of saying you have not been forgotten. You are a true hero.
