“When God made Peace Officers….”
When the lord was creating Peace Officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”
And the Lord said, Have you read the spec on this order? A Peace Officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn’t touch, and not wrinkle their uniform.
They have to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day.
They have to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half- eaten meals. And they have to have six pairs of hands.
The angel shook her head slowly and said, “Six pairs of hands….No Way.”
“It’s not the hands that are causing me the problems,” said the Lord, “It’s the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have.”
That’s on the standard model? asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, “May I see what’s in there sir?” (When they already know and wishes they had taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of their head for their partners’ safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, “ You’ll be alright ma’am, when they know it isn’t so.”
“Lord,” said the angel, touching his sleeve,” rest and work tomorrow.”
“I can’t,” said the Lord, “I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on civil service paycheck.”
The angel circled the model of the Peace Officer very slowly, “Can it think?” she asked.
“You bet,” said the Lord, “It can tell you elements of a hundred crimes, recite Miranda warnings in it’s sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five judges to debate the legality of the stop…and still it keeps it’s sense of humor.
This officer also has phenomenal personal control. They can deal with crime scenes painted in HELL, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim’s family’ and then read in the daily paper how Law Enforcement isn’t sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects.
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Peace Officer. “There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model.”
“That’s not a leak,” said the Lord, “It’s a tear.”
“What’s the tear for?” asked the angel.
“It’s for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, and for justice.”
“You’re a genius,” said the angel.
The Lord looked sober. “I didn’t put it there,” he said.

I knew Molly in Jr. high and high school from church. I always thought she was such a cute, sweet, & fun girl. I heard the news and couldn't help but think what a terrible trajedy this is for Molly and her family. But, then I took a moment and imagined Molly in heaven worshiping with our Lord, Jesus. It's helpful to remember that she's in such a better place than we are and that's a reason to celebrate! Those who know Jesus as Molly did will get to spend eternity with her.

I'm writing this here because I couldn't bring myself to speak without crying when I was standing at your bed side the last time I saw you. I speak for all of us when I say you will never, ever be forgotten.
I will never let you down again. I'm sorry I wasn't there to help you when you needed someone the most. I,ve learned more in the last month about living and the ability to fight then I have in a life time.
I've thought of you daily since the night of the shooting. I can honestly say I will think of you daily from now on. I want other officers who read this to know that they would have been lucky to ride shotgun to you because........ YOU DID EVERYTHING RIGHT!!!!!
Molly, please know we'll take of those you left behind in this world and I pray that you will watch over those of us that are still here. I know you will because that is the kind of person that you are.
your grateful friend

In the Line of Duty
A shot rings out;
It shatters the crisp night air.
To my partner I shout,
"Get the hell out of there!"
As I return fire,
And the suspect turns and flees,
I am left with only one desire;
I must bring him to his knees.
I see my partner lying on the ground
In a pool of crimson blood!
She lies quietly without making a sound
In a pool of crimson blood!
Now, I must use my radio to tell
How in the line of duty another cop fell.
I wrote this poem many years ago to honor those officers killed in the line of duty. It seems appropriate to share it here.
Although, I did not know Molly, I have heard many great things about her. We have all lost a sister, but nothing can compare to the Bowden and Thomas family's loss of a friend, wife, step-mother and daughter. Our prayers go out to them and the Columbia Police Department. May God grant you the strength to continue on with life's journey.

I only had the opportunity to meet you once it was during a ride-a-long with one of your fellow officers, but I could tell during our short conversation of your love for the job. The men and women who wear the uniform and badge are special people they are the braviest of the brave and are always expected to look danger square in the eye when everyone else is running away. Not everyone is made to be a police officer, but Molly was.
Thank You very much for you sacrifice and dedication to the people of Columbia Mo.
