Reflections for Police Officer Molly Suzanne Thomas-Bowden

Molly was such a beautiful woman. Now she is a beautiful angel patrolling the highways of heaven. My heart breaks for Molly's husband. Please know that you are not alone and have a whole country full of support, the men and women in blue as well as other survivors. Unfortunatly, I know all too well your pain. My husband, New Jersey State Trooper Bert Zimmerman, was killed in the line of duty a year and a week ago. We were only married 5 months.

Keep Molly's memory and spitit alive through your memories, your thoughts, and your heart. She is a true hero and is in good hands. She will no longer suffer. God Bless Molly's family.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go, Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always, Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own, And in time when men decide and feel safe to call the streets insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind. You will not be forgotten..We will see you in Elysium...

To the family and friends of Officer Bowden, you have lost a true hero. May you and her fellow officers be comforted during this time. This poem was in the program for one of our Troopers who lost his life last year. God Bless everyone who puts their life on the line when they put on that uniform.
"A Hero Is"
One who never hesitates to tackle the most diffciult problems.
One who is always by your side.
One who knows right from wrong.
One who acts with pride.
A hero touches every one of us,
whether it be word or deed.
Always tending to those who find themselves in need.
When a hero leaves this earth, Yes, it's sad, but true.
All too many times,
the hero is dressed in blue.

A routine car stop...there is no such thing. Molly has reminded all of us that life can take a tragic turn in the blink of an eye. We accept the risks associated to this life in law enforcement, because the rewards can be so great. I am not speaking of tangible rewards, but the pride and happiness of a job well done. We find comfort in comforting others, but pray for the safe return to our families, at the end of each shift. I know Molly touched many people around her... probably without even realizing it. Her life was cut short and she was not able to return home safely, at the end of her shift on January 10, 2005.
The presence of a woman in blue makes a statement to the community around her. I am deeply saddened to lose a fellow sister and role model to others. I never had the opportunity to meet Officer Molly Bowden, but the loss of a fellow sister hits home. My thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, partners and community. God Bless you all.

Another sister has laid down her life in the service of others. A more heroic, gallant act does not exist. To the family, friends and colleagues of Molly's know that she has assured herself a seat at the head table in Heaven and she will not be forgotten by her brothers and sisters left behind. YOu are gone, but not forgotten. We will carry on in your memory.

May God bless your family and continue to watch over us all.

Molly it was a long time ago I met you, when you were only in High School. I remember thinking what a remarkable young woman. I never realized you had entered Law Enforcement, your Mother and Father were always kind and gracious. My prayers go out to you and your family, the world has suffered a great loss of a true Hero.
