I cruised the freeways, far and near,
and patrolled the highways long.
I assisted those in need of help,
and tried to right the wrongs.
I knew my job put me at risk,
thus faith came into call;
I never drove without the Lord.
He was with me through it all.
I didn't want to leave you,
but God said that I must go.
So, I held your love inside me,
and let my spirit flow.
Tell my family, and my friends,
that everything's okay;
Up here a deputy uses wings,
to cruise the Great Highway.
Teach my children to be proud,
and to not live life in fear.
Tell them Daddy's still on watch,
and that I am always near.
And you, dear wife, remember, please
that true love never dies.
What lives today, within the heart,
lives on in Paradise.

"When I am gone, remember I'm with my savior;
then do not mourn because I've passed away.
Life holds so many griefs and disappointments,
and will you cry because I did not stay?
'Tis only for a spell we must be parted;
not many years on earth to us are given.
And when my Savior tells me you are coming,
I'll go with Him and welcome you to Heaven.
Grieve not because the eyes that looked upon you
shall never see your face on earth again;
Rejoice, because they look upon the Savior
who gave His life to ransom sinful men.
Weep not because I walk no longer with you;
remember, I am walking streets of gold.
We'll take care of your family, dont you worry about that. Thank you for, you.

TO: The family; loved ones; friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER’S PRAYER:--- O, gentle Lord ! Keep the day/night watch with me. As I begin my tour of duty, I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work, endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent upon me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think no one really cares and that I am taken for granted. Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence. Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord, I ask that I may return safely, after my tour of duty, to my loved ones and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer; and after my tour of duty is over here on earth, may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well. AMEN. *** REST IN PEACE *** Sent to you by the father of Detective J.D.Koeppen, Raleigh North Carolina; Trooper D.C.Koeppen, New Jersey State Police and Patrolman A.M.Koeppen, Wilmington North Carolina.

Matt,
Thank you for wearing the uniform proudly and for your ultimate sacrifice. I hope that your family finds peace at the end of the journey they have begun. This poem was written for my husband. Look him up and tell him we miss him and love him. He will show you around up there and I hope you cruise the Great Highway together to watch over all of us left behind.

Today, something happened that I never dreamed would. You were taken from us by someone who never should have breathed the same air as you. I never thought this day would come. Not you....you were supposed to die of old age in a rocking chair, telling stories. You were so well liked by everyone that you came into contact with and did so much to help those around you. You left something behind in everything that you did. I have never met a better cop or a better person. You taught me how to deal with people and to use my head. You reinforced the phrase "FIRM, FAIR and CONSISTENT" in your profession. It never should have happened, Matt. And we will always ask ourselves "why?". Knowing that you are not out there, pains us all. All of us former Greenwood County "boys" and all of those still there, will forever have a void that you left behind.
