"Goodbye boys in blue"
What is that wonderful sound
It’s coming from the cemetery ground
Sounds like bagpipes from a military tattoo
A large number of people gathered wearing blue
It’s a police funeral conducted in a military fashion
Marching in line with pride and passion
They are saying goodbye to their fallen comrade
All performed with the precision of a military parade
An observer cannot feel anything but proud
To have touched the life of the person in the funeral shroud
To give your life in such a way
Heroic to the end, the supreme price to pay
The dedication of the boys in blue
To sacrifice their lives for you
They are eternally in your debt
The sacrifice, you do not regret

"A Policeman was killed last night"
A policeman was killed last night.
He died while protecting your rights.
His creed was to protect and serve.
This fate he didn't deserve.
A mom and dad have lost a son.
So many other jobs he could've done.
His wife and kids are left alone.
Their daddy won't be coming home.
His fellow officers are hurt so deep.
For a fallen brother they weep.
The morning paper will print a story.
About a policeman who died in glory.
The flags will fly at half mast.
Politicians and citizens will seem sad. " Not in our small town, thats so bad!"
By next week they will have forgot.
That a policeman was killed last night.

I am very fortunate that I was able to know you and work with for a short time. You were a good public servant in MANY ways and the citizens of Boiling Spring Lakes will miss you greatly. It is truly a sad day when a fellow officer is taken away. I want to thank you for being a friend to so many people and for showing me how to gig flounder. Rest in peace brother.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.
Today, January 22, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Police Officer James Mitchell (Mitch) Prince who died in the line of duty just four days ago.
When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.
Officer Prince's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

It saddens me that another officer has lost their lives protecting the community they serve. As a child and now as a fellow police officer, I still find the true heroes in life to be my father and police officers that work the mean streets. People don't realize how quickly a situation can turn for the worse. Mitch you are one of these heroes. May God bless your immediate family and please watch over us as we continue to serve the community in which we live. May your true heart and sacrifice never be forgotten.
January 22, 2005

My fiancée, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Mitch did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Mitch be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Prince's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.
Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Mitch is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Mitch was well respected and well loved.
Thank you Officer Prince for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancée Dennis for me.
Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!
