To the family and friends of Officer Gonzalez. I am sorry for your loss, and keep you in my prayers. As a corrections officer, you are "locked up" with the people that society does not want to deal with. Although I have never been to California I am sorry for Officer Gonzalez's family and CDC's loss. When I heard the news of the death of Officer Gonzalez I was practicing with my side handle baton. Although I had never met Officer Gonzalez I know that we had a connection, him being in the line of work that I am trying so very hard to get into. He risked his life everyday on those tiers and he paid the ultimate price, with his life. May you rest in peace Officer Gonzalez. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Gonzalez Family.

I remember being a corrections officer in the local jail here. I remember an inmate looking at me and saying, "We could take you out right her and now if we wanted to". I looked at the inmate and said, "If its my time to go its my time to go".
Obviously it was Officer Gonzalez's time to go.
Thank you for your service! Rest in Peace.

To the family, friends and co-workers of Officer Gonzalez. I pray that Manual is with God in Heaven.
The public's general view of correctional officers is certainly less than favorable. This needs to be changed. We need the support of the public. The public's image of correctional officers can be greatly enhanced by a more objective media. The public needs to read all the condolences listed on this website. I beleive it would give them a clearer perspective of Officer Gonzalez's character. I've been in the Department for 18 years and I can attest that Manual's character was and is far more typical of a CDC officer than it is the exception. This sentiment is the previlant theme that stands out not only in the relections from the people that personally knew and worked with him but people from other agencies and inmates as well. The positive and professional demeanor displayed by the majority of CDC officers far out weighs the demenor of a few 'bad apples'.
Officer Gonzalez put his life on the line everyday of his 17 years with the CDC. He paid the ultimate price. It can happen to any of us at any time.
It is our responsibility not to allow the public to forget Manual's sacrafice and the sacrafice of those before him because of a non-complacent media.

Correctional Officer Manual A. Gonzalez (Gonzo) I do not know you personally but, you are my brother may you watch over us as we continue to walk the tiers. I will never forget the day I was sitting in block training and I heard the news my heart dropped. I pray daily for you and your family. I am sorry it had to be you, who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect us and the public. We love you!
Correctional Officer Casey P. Miller Wasco State Prison-California (WSP/RC)
The correctional officer stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, officer.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the officer waited quietly,
For the judgment of his god.
"Step forward now, officer,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"
