Reflections for Sergeant Howard King Stevenson

It makes me just sick at heart when I read of yet another fine officer taken from his family and friends so unnecessarily. Gunfire - automatic weapons - - will it ever stop? You went out there to protect and serve and you were killed. What would we do in this world if there were not people like you that give their own lives to keep us safe? My son gave his life in 1998 - the answers to the why"s never come - as he, you were doing the job you loved and this was the ultimate price you paid. May God be with your family and may he give them comfort during this terrible time - watch over them Howard.

A Policeman's Poem The policeman stood to face his God. Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining. Just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, Policeman. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other check? To my church have you been true? The policeman squared his shoulders, No Lord, I guess I ain't, because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint I've had to work most Sundays and at times my talk was tough, and sometimes I've violent. Becasue the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep. Though I've worked a lot of overtimewhen the bills got just too steep. And I never past a cry for help. Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me. I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They've never wnated me around except to calm their fear. If you've a place for me here, LordIt needed be so grand. I never expected or had too much but if you don't ... I'll understand. There was silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, For the judgement of his God. "Step forward now, Policeman, You've borne your burdens well. COME WALK A BEAT ON HEAVENS STREETS, YOU'VE DONE YOUR TIME IN HELL." May you rest in peace and God BLess your family. In hope there is Valor.

To the family and friends of Sergeant Stevenson,
This is such a sad and horrible tragedy. I wish I could say something magical here to make everything better, but if you can remember just one thing during all of this...YOU ARE NOT ALONE. My prayers are indeed with you during this difficult time.

Thank you for giving your life to protect the people of Ceres. It is such a huge sacrifice considering that you never even met some of the people that you died protecting. You are a true HERO! May God bless your family and the other officers of Ceres.

You saved my son's life seven years ago. Without hesitation he would willingly have put his life on the line for you as well. The policemen's brotherhood is strong, firm and well established. I have witnessed first hand the dedication and loyalty that each of the officers have for one another. It is truly an inspiring and awesome revaluation. Howe, you are sorely missed. YOUR personality on the Ceres force can never be replaced. You were unique to the department. I, as a parent, pray daily for those you have left behind both on the force and at home. It will never be the same but we do have hope, hope that what you did will stand as a witness to the good and the bad elements in our community. May your example continue to illuminate, inspire and educate future generations.

It is always a shock to hear that another brother is lost to the war on our own streets. You will always be remembered. You will always be missed. Not a day will go by where you will be thought of and reflected upon. To Sgt. Stevenson's family, you are in good hands. Though the pain will never end, you will keep going. Because your father, husband, friend, wants you to. We all know what the ultimate price is in this job but we all pray that it is never seen. God Speed Brother and while your up there walking your beat in heaven, say hello to my brother. Deputy Sheriff William Hunter EOW 7-26-2001, we all miss him.

Howie, your memorial service was as grand as they get, as I'm sure you saw from above. By reading the reflections posted, it's obvious that people from around the globe have been saddened by your untimely departure. I praise the officers from Ceres PD, Modesto PD, Stanislaus Co. S/O and others that tracked down your killer and were able to end the ordeal without any other innocent people being harmed. The shifts worked together with you, the times fishing, hunting and Mt. Madness with you will never be forgotten. You and your family will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. Until we meet again.

A PIECE OF AMERICA DIED
Somebody killed a Policeman today
and a piece of America died
A piece of our country he swore to protect
will be buried with him... at his side
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court
with counsel demanding his rights
while a young widowed mother must work for her kids
and spend many long, lonely nights
The beat that he walked was a battlefield too
just as if he had gone off to war
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half staff
to his name they will add a gold star
Yes, somebody killed a Policeman today
It happened in your town or mine
While we slept in comfort, behind our locked doors
a Cop laid his life on the line
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street
and he stands at each new rookie's side
He answered the call, and gave us his all
and a piece of America died
