Hurst,

Tracy and I just visited with your Mom, Dad, brother, sister, your two nephews and your gorgeous little girl Malia.

Tracy was holding Malia and then was playing with her on the floor when she started saying "Da Da, Da Da" over and over again. It was unbelievable. Your Mom said she just started saying that recently but to hear it was something special.

Your Mom said Malia is also getting her first tooth coming in.

Greg showed me the tattoo he got in memory of you and his plans for a few more he'd like to get. He wants to get your badge, a Pittsburgh Steelers, and a Marine Corps Emblem all on his right arm. I told him he forgot about your OSU Buckeyes.

Well, it's past midnight talk to you tomorrow. Rest in peace.

As always Semper Fi.

I didn't know this man, but I know his kind. A man willing to stand in the gap, ready to be there when things get tight.
My heart breaks for his family; a wife and a little one. Loved ones asking why and how.
Maybe someday your pain will give way to pride in knowing that your Husband, Father, Son or Brother was a man. A man that knew what he was about and what he would do to keep our streets safe.
Please know that he is appreciated more than you can know...by all of us.

I had the honor to sever and work with Bryan Hurst in the Marine Corps stationed in Hawaii as K-9 Military Policeman. Bryan was a great guy and could always make you laugh with his dry sense of humor and his quick wit. I was in disbelief when I received an e-mail from a Marine who we both served with in Hawaii and is still on active duty, of the tragedy which had befallen one of our own. It pains me more to know that Bryan lived just a state away and yet we never got together after our return to the states. As a Marine and a fellow police officer I want to extend my deepest condolences to his family and department. I hope in later days his daughter will be able to reflect on her father and read these entries made by people who knew him and others who may not have known him but respected him for who he was and what he did for his Country and Community. Bryan Hurst is a true Hero, one who gave his life in defense of others.
God Bless and “Semper Fi”

Hurst,

I can't stop thinking about you. All day, all night, you, Marissa, Malia, and your family are all I think about. Donnie too.

December 22nd was the last time I saw you. You looked good such a proud papa. I always enjoyed talking to you about your job and hearing your police stories. I was excited to learn you got that Detective job you told me about. I remember sitting there looking at your badge in your wallet, admiring it, #2057.

I've read about and heard about what happened at the bank and I try to picture what went down and how you reacted and saved all those people's lives.

Men, we don't say "I love you friend." But I wish I would have that afternoon after our visit together. I cherish that day's memories of you as well as the other 18 years worth of memories we shared.

I'm going to miss you very much Hurst. I know you'll be the first one to greet me if I'm lucky enough to see you in heaven. Until then...

I will see you on your birthday every April 15th, and every Marine Corps Birthday November 10th, and the saddest and worst day of my life: every January 6th, the day you were taken from us.

GOD bless you and your brothers in blue, it was a privilege to meet all the fine officers of the Columbus Division of Police.

I will never forget you, your courage, bravery and memory will live on forever.

Semper Fi my friend,

Brandon

Bryan,
I remember when you first came on. Not many "rookies" make an impact but you did. Rookies come and go, you don't get attached to them. But somehow you touched us and you became one of "us." And then you were off on your own and came back to the 12th precinct on a different shift. It was great to see you during shift change because you always had a smile on your face. Some officers come to work in a bad mood but not you, you always had that smile. Not once did I ever see you angry. You are one of the greatest officers and people I have ever met. The goodness that was in you will never die, it will live on in the lives of the people that you touched. I will miss you.

A friend of many brothers

January 15, 2005

I had the great honor of serving as a USMC MP military working dog handler with Bryan in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii from 1992-1994. Bryan and I were roommates for much of that time. He will always be a true friend and a brother to me. His memory will remain with me until the Lord takes my last breath. Then, Bryan and I will once again serve and protect together, this time from the other side of the pearly gates. I'm certain that he is standing a post there now, with his always-faithful working dog "Robby".

I also had the pleasure of meeting Bryan's mother, stepfather, little brother and sister once in Hawaii. To you and his other family and friends I express my sorrow for the events that took our young Marine and Police Officer. I am very proud of my friend for being a servant of your community.

To Marissa and Malia; words can not bring back this special man into your lives. I can only hope that my promise to eternally remember him adds comfort in your greatest time of need.

To all police officers and servicemen, thank you for your contributions.

Semper Fidelis and God bless this great nation.

On August 8th of 2000 Robert Stanze ended his watch... We still can't believe it will be 5 years this August. One thing we have grown to appreciate, is the love of community, family and friends. Don't be afraid to rely on them. Reach out if you need us. We will forever be by your side.
Our prayers are with Officer Hurst's family, his friends and coworkers. God Bless you all. Officer Hurst you are in a better place, find Bobby...and talk about your daughter and his twins and Wil..he will watch out for you, show you the ropes... and please, watch out for all of the rest of us. Every Police Officer performs one act of bravery....when they take their oath...after that, it's all in the line of duty. THANK YOU for your bravery and sacrifice.
