Reflections for Police Officer Bryan Scott Hurst
Hello Bryan, It's Martin from the good old 5pct. I have been meaning to leave a message for you on the reflections page over the last several months. Kyle at work here made a really nice poster with news clipings from that terrible day. It was hung up at the substation to remind new and old officer of how much of a hero you were here as a Columbus Ohio police officer. Well hope you are watching over all of us down here. Dear Bryan,
You continue to be in my thoughts daily. Spending weekends in your home continues to find me missing you, your humor, your kindess, and all the special things that made you my "favorite son-in-law". Your birthday memorial at Kingwood was so touching. All the friends that came to honor you on your birthday are a true testimony to the wonderful person that you were to everyone. I had a special wreath made for you with Malia's picture. She brings such joy to my life. I remind her what a special Daddy you are whenever we look at your pictures. She has such a hearty laugh for such a little girl. She makes serious faces like you too. Malia is your legacy, Bryan. You can be so proud of Marissa too. She is a wonderful Mommy; balancing her career as an officer and a single parent. The outpouring of support from law enforcement continues to amaze me. Please continue to watch over us, and know that I continue to keep you close to my heart always.
Love and Hugs,
Sherri

Bryan, sorry I didnt get a chance to write you sooner. Im sure you're aware that your brother took home the 1st Annual Bryan Hurst Memorial Tourney trophy. That day couldnt have been any better, fate was very eminent. We missed you at the final table but we'll play again later. Continue to watch over us!!

Bryan-
I start to write to you frequently, but then I change my mind because I don't know exactly what I want to say.
Things have been busy around here. When you first left us, it was non-stop activity with calling hours, the funeral, then benefits and so many visitors. Things have slowed down somewhat and my I have a new "normal." I no longer expect you to come home at 10:30 and wait to hear from you on the nextel. It doesn't mean that I don't think about you every single day. It just means that I know the reality of the situation.
I've now celebrated our anniversary, my birthday, and your birthday without you here. It was weird... not so much the birthdays, but definitely our anniversary. My birthday is mine, yours is yours, but the anniversary was OUR day. Not having you here to celebrate is was hard.
We had a birthday memorial service for you last Friday at Kingwood. It was awesome - you would have loved the helicopter formation. Friends and family were able to gather to honor your memory. I think that it was definitely good for your mother. However, since I was on duty during the service, it felt different. The events that directly followed your death had me there grieving as a wife, but this time I was there grieving as a fellow officer. It was easier this time.
Malia has changed so much that you would not belive it. She has four teeth and is about to walk! Now that the sun is out, we've definitely determined that she has your skin. She has a little tan and is so cute.
About a month ago, I heard the most unbelievable song on the radio. It is called "Arlington" by Trace Adkins. It's country, and definitely not your style, but it is one of the most beautiful songs ever and I feel like it is a perfect representation of your life. It is about a soldier who is killed in the line of duty and then buried at Arlington National Cemetery. He is a very young man, who talks about how proud he is to be buried there amongst the best. I believe he calls them "the chosen ones." The intro is violin/bagpipes and they even refer to the 21 gun salute. The song is heartwrenching but amazing.
Malia and I miss you every day.
Love,
Marissa

Bryan,
I am the wife of a Columbus Police Officer. It is so hard to watch all your friends grieve. My husband and I went to a benefit for you and we could feel the love and compassion for you every where we turned. My heart aches for Marissa and your daughter. We have a four year old son and when he saw what happend to you on the news, he was so beside himself. He couldn't understand why someone would take Malia's daddy away (neither can I). I pray for your family all the time. Your wife seems so strong but thats probably one of her many qualities that attracted you to her in the first place.
My husband went to a poker beenfit for you last night. I can't believe that he co-won. I was so proud of him but I was even prouder when he gave your brother the trophy. I'm not surprised that he did that. His heart is bigger than he lets people see.
Marissa I think of you all the time and I hope that you are OK.
Proud to be an officers wife,
K. Davis

Marissa,
Just wanted to say that you are a strong and kind hearted person and you are doing a wonderful job. A gentlemen came in our lobby the other day and I had just said I hope they send the right deputy to handle this one. He was truly scared and watching you take your time to listen and explain the way you did to him was so wonderful. I just thought everyone should know what a kind heart you have. And I am sure that Bryan too is proud as he watched down and seen you helping others.
God Bless you and Thanks

Bryan,
Just wanted to wish you a happy birthday. It just don't seem fair that you were taken from us at such a early age. We can never thank you enough for giving you life to protect others. That fatefull day will play in our minds forever. Rest asure that we will never forget you and we will see that there is justice for you, Marissa, and Malia. In a little over a month my son will be born and his middle name will be named after you. Simply a "HERO". He will grow up knowing the sacrafice you made and how you simply chose to protect others although they sometimes never appreciate it.
ALWAYS REMEMBERED AND NEVER FORGOTTEN.

HURST,
Today is your birthday but it's not going to be a happy one.
We're going down to the cemetary today as well as the bank. I hope we get to talk to a few of the bank employees who were there that day.
So, I'm hoping for a little more closure today.
This last week or so leading up to your birthday was difficult, knowing you will not be celebrating number 34 with Malia and Marissa.
Gone but never forgotten, we're still missing you a whole lot. See you in a few hours.

Bryan, well yesterday was 3 months, I still go to the bank and leave flowers and sometimes there are flowers already there, many people still want to do that in many ways to say thanks and that you have not been forgot.
I still have bad dreams from that day, getting the call, the drive to the Hospital and seeing you at the Hospital, and not wanting to believe it was really you, it just still seems like a bad dream. We have got to see and spend some time with Malia, she is so precious, your little girl.........Its so funny to see her look at another man when he talks, I think she still looks for you. Marissa seems to be doing well, and is pretty strong to go back to work and be the single mother.
I look at your photo's every day, and have been putting a scrapbook together. I wish we could have spent more time together, we talked about it all the time. Well, until we meet again, continue to look down upon us and guide us, we love and miss you very much. Love You Gina

Bryan
It's been 91 days since you were taken from us. i can still here the 21 gun salute and taps playing in my head like it was yesterday. I can still feel the goose bumps up my neck after they did the last call on your cruiser. I still can't believe you're gone. We're still dealing with the 'should-have-dones' over here. But we know in our hearts that you knew then, what you see now, that we love you and miss you. Some days, our hearts still feel physically broken. Give us all strength, especially Mark and Brandon. Let them know you are still with them. Watch over us all.
