I was hired by the Newington Police Department in January 1990. Upon completing the police academy I was lucky enough to be adopted by the Lavery brothers. Jimmy, Jerry and Peter looked out for me like no one has. Jimmy and Jerry helped become the investigator I am and there was never a time that I was alone in the field because one of those guys was always there. Jimmy and Jerry retired and it was left to Peter to watch over me. Peter and Pam stood by my side at my lowest times and helped celebrate the best of them. Peter and Pam always had the ability to pick up your spirits. It was Peter who nagged, persuaded and cajoled me into returning to college. I did and will graduate this year. I never would have done without him. It was an honor to have Peter and Pam at my wedding and to welcome my children into this world. I will miss roll call with Pete who always knew more about who was working than I did! I will miss Pete bringing me coffee and making the others jealous. I will miss our heart to heart talks. But I will especially miss his smile and his laugh. Pam, Ray and Sam, we are here for you all in every possible way. Pete we will never forget!!! Love, Jeanine

I’ve been a member of the Newington Fire Department for the past 20 years. 8 years ago, I was hired as a Public Safety Dispatcher for the Town of Newington, after 8 years in the Town of Wethersfield. I got to know Peter very well. If it wasn’t for Peter, I would not be a motorcycle owner. We’ve done a lot of riding, had a lot of cigars and had many laughs. That smile of yours and your laugh will always be in my mind.
There will be many, many things I’ll miss. I don’t know when it will really hit that Peter is no longer with us. The only thing I do know is that you are my Hero, Peter. You have made the Ultimate Sacrifice.
I can only hope that my daughter, Alexandra (3 years old) will always remember her “Uncle Peter”. She asks about you daily, and she knows that you are with the Angles in Heaven.
To Pam, Ray and Samantha, God has truly taken “The Best”. May your pain ease over time.
Peter…I love you, my brother, and I’ll miss you.

May our Heavenly King give each and everyone of you the strength and guidance to recover from these trying times.

You are a true hero and as seen from the reflections left by others a man of great character. So often this world looks to sports figures and the like as their heroes but it is men like Officer Lavery who fight daily with the wickedness of this world and stand firm in the face of danger or just offer a helping hand to the stranded motorist that are the true heroes. May God bless and comfort his family and his department. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

An Infantry Soldier never dies. I was told that in 1992 by Drill Sgt H.. He never dies because he lives in the heart and sole of all Infantry Soldiers before him and all Infantry Soldiers after him. Although I am not a police officer im sure the same applies in law enforment.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Peter did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Peter be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Lavery's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.
Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Peter is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Peter was well respected and well loved.
Thank you Officer Lavery for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.
Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Thank you Officer Lavery for a job well done. Please continue to watch over us and protect us as only you can. You will forever be at our side and in our hearts.
For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.
IF I KNEW
If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.
There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"
But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.
So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear
Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.
