Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Master Police Officer Peter J. Lavery

Officer Lavery, you are the true definition of the word "HERO". Although I had only seen and talked to you on a few occasions, I was able to see what a great individual, father, and husband you were.
You and your wife raised two wonderful children, a son who I have shared many moments with throughout my college years, and a daughter who's smile could light up a room at any time.
I am proud to know that one of my best friends' fathers is one of the most brave and heroic people on the face of the earth.
You will not be forgotten.
Rest In Peace, with love and prayers.

Dad,
I hated Easter without you, dad. I thought about you the entire day.

The dog Otis was even very uset, he keeps eating uncooked spaghetti from the pantry. People think he is Italian but I keep telling him he is 100 % Irish.

I love you so much and think about you every minute.

Love your favorite daughter,

Sam

Happy Easter my dear friend Peter.
Know that you are loved and missed, and not forgotten on this day.

There isn’t a day that goes by that I do not think of you, and ask why.
Of all that I have known, you deserved so much more.

This year is going to be filled with many "1st's" and this Easter is just one of many to come.

About this time of year, I would usually get the call from you, either telling me you were riding, or you were outside in the sun, smoking a cigar having a cup of coffee, "Working for the fine people on Newington who need me", while I spend all my days inside.

Well, the nice weather is coming and every time I look at my bike, I think of you and I miss the phone calls and conversations.

I know I speak for all when I say you are so sorely missed.
Rest now and know that all is well here, most certainly not the same, but well.

This year, every time I get on my bike, I will ride for you.

Dear Peter,

Peter, I visit this site EVERY night when I come in to work. The thoughtful and very heartfelt messages left for you truly tell the tale of a wonderful husband, devoted father, loyal friend, and most of all, a dedicated police officer. My regret in life is that I never will got the chance to know you. It would have been my honor to look up to you as a role model, as I do my own father, your cousin. My kids, Nate & Jameson, would have loved listening to your stories and looking up to you as well. Rest assured that they will always know of their brave cousin Peter. I will never let them forget.

I wrote a poem for you and have posted it to my favorite poetry website. It would be my honor to share it with you...

Our Fallen Hero

You answered the call for help
On a cold December night
Thoughts of your safety you did not concern
Though in your heart you felt some fright
You are our hero Peter
In the badge you wore with great pride
God could not bear to see you endure
He called you home on your final ride
In this world you left three hearts
To grieve
So many questions, too little answers
Difficult to believe
Your happiness is now their sorrow
Because they know with you
There will be no tomorrow
Please let me take this moment to reflect
I speak for the family when I say
God Bless you Peter
In our hearts you'll remain
Forever and a day

May God continue to bless you Peter as well as Samantha, Ray and Pam. Our thoughts and prayers are always with you all.

Enjoy your ride!!

All our best,

Tim, Jen, Nate & Jameson Lavery

Peter, I am typing this for Erik who wanted me to tell you that he misses his Thursday mornings in dispatch with you, the lectures about doing good in school, and to live your dreams. He says when he grows up he wants to be as good a man as you. Thank you for the impression you have left for us to live up to. They will be hard shoes to fill. Thanks for your friendship.

Dad,
Thank you for being my father for twenty years. I always knew how lucky I was to have a father like you. I miss you so much now that you are not here. I keep praying every day that this never happened; and when I wake up you will be there reading your newspaper at the kitchen table.

Kayaking wont be as fun this year on the "Mighty Matabassett." But dont worry, I will make sure your kayak does not sit there all summer. We will go on Silver Lake, Connecticut River, and the Mighty Matabassett. You can paddle along right next to us.

Remember the day we got our kayaks. Patrick and I bought them spur of the moment and brought them home to show you and mom thinking you were going to be mad at us. And as soon as you found out you yelled at Patrick and me to get into your car. I thought you were going to make us return them but it was so you could get one too. I was so happy that day. Then when we got home with our new three kayaks, we tried them out on Silver Lake. I loved it.

I will let you get back to motorcycling and kayaking. I love you Daddy.
Your favorite daughter,
Samantha

Pete...What can I say? I should have listened to you and bought a bike so we could have shared the rides you went on. Thank you for being so good to Jeanine over the years...you can't imagine how she misses you. Thank you for being such a great family man, a friend to so many even if they didn't deserve it, and a wonderful example of what a policeman really SHOULD be. Thank you for being my friend. I'll never forget the night with the Chieftains.....I hope you enjoy the cigars I left with you. We were supposed to have them after dinner on New Years' with Ray and Mac. You were a hell of a man: Here's to you and those like you...Damn few left.

Uncle Peter, today is Lisa's birthday, not only were you her uncle and godfather you were her friend and she misses you terribly. We all do. The days don't seem the same anymore, a piece of us is gone and can't be replaced. I have a hard time with simple things like looking at your house or driving down our street. The memory of you is everywhere as you were a big part of our lives and we are the better for it. I strain to write this as I struggle with trying to be strong. Poof though I may be I'm glad I always let you know I love you as you let all of us know. Rest in peace knowing that we will do our best to help your family in any way we can. You gave all you had, God bless you. Love, Uncle Bob

To the family and all who view this.
Peter is one of many officers who gave their lives so that we (all of us) are protected and can live in what we call America. Peter asked nothing special in return. With Peters lost, a wife lost a husban, a family lost a father, a comminuty lost a protector, a department lost an outstanding officer. More so America lost a officer that gave more then asked. Peter loved his family, his community and his job. We will miss his smile, his knowledge and kindness. God bless those who watch over us and protect us while we are here on this earth.

Pete..it's hard to believe you are gone. I will never forget the first time I met you for the Aselton ride in 1999. You were on the gold wing with a fresh cigar and a cup of coffee mounted to the handle bars. I can't thank you enough for helping our department every year with CT special olympic ride. It will not be the same ride this year with out you. Rest in peace my friend.

Only Memories ?

No woman should have to live with only the memory of the warmth and loving touch of her husband,
No daughter with only the memory of the comfort and joy of sitting on her father’s knee,
No son with only the memory of the strong and loving example of what a man and father should be,
No friend with only the memory of the many shared good times and camaraderie.

But in time, as you live on, when you really need it the most, close your eyes, take a deep breath and say a prayer…and you will feel the warmth, the touch, the comfort, the joy, the strength, and the love
…that only a memory can bring.

Peter, may you rest in peace. Our team will never forget that night. We will never forget watching your body being carried out of the house covered by an American flag and your wife and children standing over you. The coward that ambushed you fled to the basement, which for him, led straight to Hell.

Peter, you will be missed.
From our conversation hours earlier, as always you were doing the right thing, providing for your family and looking forward to retirement. You will never know how much of a impression you have made on everyone you came in contact with. We will "NEVER FORGET".

Dearest Peter, I'll never forget the bear hugs you would give me as you would say "hello, dear".

You always had a smile on your face. Thank you for being my husband's best friend "possibly his only friend in the whole wide world!!".

I know that you are in the Lord's bosom right now. You gave so much love and I know that you can still feel all of our love for you. You're light shines so bright in heaven because you so exemplified Jesus while on earth.

Peter, I know that you are interceding in prayer for us with our Lord. Thank you Peter for being a friend. You will be greatly missed.
