Reflections for Master Police Officer Peter J. Lavery
Hey Pete, I hope everything is going well up there. Keep an eye on our new angel Ciara. We miss you both terribly
November 27, 2005
Thanksgiving has come and gone this year. It was not the same without you. This year I went over Uncle Jim's house and learned how to play poker! Otis is up to 120 pounds and eating everything in sight. We all miss you here! I love you and tell Ciara we miss her too.

Sir-
I was looking through the memorials for Connecticut officers and was shocked to see your name. I was in the Connecticut National Guard from 1992 until I went active duty in 1994. You were my C.O. in B Co. 1/102nd INF. I want to thank you for your service as a police officer and a soldier. You are a true hero. Rest easy, sir.

Hey Pete..Its been a while since my last visit, but you are thought of everyday by me as well as Dad, who finally retired after 31 years in the Army. I know you have Ciara with you and you will protect her and keep her safe. Let her know she will be missed just as much as you are.

Pete, I just wanted to let you know how honored & proud I felt to be at your 1st anual memorial ride. It was such a beautiful day with an absolutely amazing turn out. Then of course I'm sure you knew that, perched on that Golden Ride in heaven. I brought my Fidelco guide dog, Jody too. She was a big hit with your many friends, supporters, & police brothers & sisters. I will always feel so honored to be related to you Pete, but so saddened that you and I weren't close cousins. Rest assured that you will never be forgotten. My son, Nate, is begining to understand who you are. He knows that you were a brave policeman who is now at home at peace with God. I will never let either of my sons forget. God Bless you Pete. Rest in peace cousin.

Uncle Pete, Im sure you saw the ride in your honor, perched up in heaven, yelling to Lisa and I that we should get a real bike before the Harley breaks down...we missed you...we miss you everyday...Lil Jimmy got to ride with grandpa in the front car, he was kinda sad...still confused about why you are in Heaven now instead of here with us. The turnout was fantastic. Seeemed like there was more bikes and people than they said. Everyone did such a great job organizing it, like they had done it a hundred times before..flawless. Your bike,(Even though its a rice rocket)was beautiful..I was sooooo nice to get everyone together in your honor again, we should have done it alot more before DEC.30th...wish you were here in more than just spirit...when we visit your grave, Jillian puts here arms around herself and hugs you...saying"Here's the hug I owe you Uncle Pete." Well, In Closing, thanks to all that made the ride so special, the organizers, helpers, sponsors, the thousands of riders...Aunt Pam, Ray and Sammy....I dont believe it is ever going to get easier not having you around...we all miss you....
Love
Jim, Lisa, Jimmy and Jillian

MPO Peter J Lavery believed in honoring those heros who came before us. Pete rode in Americas 911 Ride to honor those lost in the Attack on America, he rode in Rolling Thunder to honor those lost in the Armed Services of this great country and he rode in Law Ride to honor those brave men and women who gave their lives to protect and serve their communities, states and country.
Well Pete we rode yesterday (Sunday 9/18/05), more than 1000 of us, to honor you. There were many people from all over the state as well as other states who knew you but there were just as many or more citizens who never met you but they needed to be there. But then you know that, I'm sure you were looking down on us the entire time.
Pete, you always believed that it is our duty to never forget those who went before us, it is our pledge to you that we will continue your tradition and start a new tradition of keeping your sacrice and memory alive, each of us in our own way.
Peace my friend

Peter, I didn't know you personally but I watched your memorial ride go by today and all I can say is it was an AWESOME site. You made the ultimate sacrifice and you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my brother and keep the rest of us safe while we continue to protect this world.

Peter, as a fellow graduate of Newington High 1975 and someone who was luck to know both you and Pam, I feel both honored and privileged to be riding in your memory this Sunday for the 1st annual Peter Lavery Memorial run. I wish I had the chance to ride with you when you were here however I know you'll be there somewhere riding easy.

Well Pete, we did the ride this year (America's 9-11) and It just was not the same with out you. We rode long and we rode hard and all the way. Most of the saddle time was spent, thinking of you, hoping to see you at an exit ramp, stopping traffic or maybe going by the formation of bikes with that wave of your hand and the beep of the horn as you so often did as you drove by me.
Not this year!
I know you were there in spirit and we all had you in our hearts. We stopped at the Police memorial wall in DC and sat silent for a while, across from your name, then headed out to the Irish pub (just as you would have wanted it).
So many people came up to me during the ride, to offer their kind words to me and tell me a story of about you.
I was not aware that they remembered you and I but they did and that is a testament to you.
As time goes by, I realize how blessed I was to know you and have the time and memories that I did with you.
You have changed my outlook on life and I continue to learn from your influence.
You are very missed and always in our thoughts.
Rest in peace brother.

Pete there isn't a day that passes when I don't think back about the years I spent growing up in the NPD. For twenty years I had an extended family, you guys were like second fathers, most of the time knowing more of what I was up to than my own dad. I remember the frequent "slow down young lady" and "it's getting late to be out" speeches that I can only thank you for now. As I look into attending the police academy I carry memories of you with me. God Bless you.

No songs of feather break the virgin dawn
The silence is heavy on the wide lawn
Row upon row of navy blue and black
Five thousand stone faces can not hold tears back
Through the pillars, winds a long midnight train
Erect statues of men line the church lane
Arms snap to salute as the hearse drives on
Motorcycles ride for a brother who has gone
An entire country has come out to mourn
Widow and children looking lost and forlorn
A folded flag is set atop the casket
Five thousand police have come to bare it
Silver badge of courage upon his breast
Eyes closed peacefully as he lies in rest
Taken to protect and serve in Heaven's streets
As our fallen brother lies in eternal sleep
A nation mourns when a policeman falls
For he has died a hero to protect us all

Peter,
You've helped me and touched many hearts. My fondest memory of growing up in Berlin is hanging outside of Central Pizza - and Officer Peter Lavery. You were a Berlin Officer at that time and always "popped up" where we were hanging around, asking me what I'm doing and whom I'm with. I was proud when my friends would ask - "who's that?". My response - my cousin. I miss you dearly and think of all the advise you gave me in my teen years.
Love you.

Peter,
I just wanted to say I enjoyed the cigars you always had to share, the talks about what ever came to mind and to see the best you brought out in everyone you met! You were the first in the family outside the Egan's to really chat w/ me, ecspecially once you knew I was active duty. GO NAVY! Pete you are a great inspiration for everyone to look upto.
Not a puff of a cigar, nor a sip of irish whiskey goes by with out a thought or spoken word of you, a beloved family member and friend.
I am glad Peter, that I got to meet and shake your hand, share a drink and a cigar.
You are missed my friend and always loved!

Peter I never got the chance to tell you thank you for that long talk we had a few years back. It probably saved my life and it gave me a new outlook on not only life but also how important family really is. I guess what I really want to say is THANK YOU for everything. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Just clipped a picture out of todays paper Peter. Your name has been inscribed into the Law Enforcement Memorial in Meriden. What an incredible honor. Even though the sacrifice was the ultimate one, we are all so very proud of you! So priveliged to be related to you. I will be bringing Nate & Jameson to the memorial very soon so they can see their brave cousin Peter's name among the list of heroes. God Bless you Peter and Happy Belated Birthday from the entire Enfield Lavery's. Tim, Jen, Nate & Jameson.

Peter,
We made a trek to the Holy Land, 3 days of bright clear warm blue skies. Somehow I can't help but believe you had something to do with it..Watching out for us are you?
We made the usual stops, shared a cigar with Old Pete, stopped at the G-Man for chili and a Killians.
Riding down the Knunklestown and Rt34 (which from this date forward and for all time will be refered to as Pete's Road) I drifted back in time recalling the thousands of miles ridden together, the HPMC, the inane arguements over unimportant subjects, the mountains we crossed, the long winding roads (you go ahead, I'll catch up at the end), the civil war history and the tears from laughing so hard it hurt. I could see UNWIND a turn or two ahead and catch the aroma of a Dom Diego Playboy in the wind.
Pete, we needed the time and the ride. We knew it would be difficult. I have to tell you riding the Knunklestown I shed some tears, not tears of laughter but from the sadness of missing a friend. We missed you Pete, we missed you dearly.
Major Lavery, you occupy the high ground, hold it for us we will be coming.
Peace my friend.

Sir,
The bravery that you displayed on a daily basis is beyond words. You made the ultimate sacrafice anyone in this line of work can make. That night you selfishly entered that home ignoring all dangers, without fear to assist those you swore to protect. That night you became a hero, not just to your family and your community, but to officers throughout the world. Although I had never met you, I know that you are watching over me each and every call for service I answer. God Bless you and your family!

Pete, so many special events have come and gone since you left us. It is certainly not the same without you. The kids decorated an Easter egg for you, they even had a motorcycle and helmet for your "egg". Not a day goes by that something happens that I think, I have to tell Pete this...he'll love it. We are looking forward to the honors you so richly deserve in DC. Smile down on us, we miss you greatly. Pooh
