Deputy Hedman,
Sir, it has been 8 years since your End of Watch but you are still honored and remembered. I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just as an LEO but for our Country as well when you served with the U.S. Army-especially during the Vietnam War. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 7th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know that both the pain and pride are forever.

I have very strong feelings about your partner, and while some may disagree with me, I know one result of his performance was that your family did not have to relive your murder over in the ordeal of a trial and then endure the stranglehold that appellate rights have on their lives. I am glad they were spared that.

Rest In Peace.

Almost been seven years, Bob. You are not forgotten. Just kept my promise to visit your family each year in New York state. Your brothers, your mother and I drank a toast to you from some local homemade wine! Your family is doing pretty well, considering. Your mom and I always go for breakfast at the Big Chief Cafe in Schenevus, right next to your high school. Wish you'd been with us! Rest in peace, my brother and friend.

D.S. Hedman served proudly and was deeply loved and respected by those who knew him. It is a tragedy to lose him. We never know when our lives on this earth will end, but we can make a reservation in Heaven now and assure us a place when God calls us to Himself. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) and He PAID the price for our sins on the Cross so we don't have to pay the penalty for our sins. Yipee! If we accept His payment by faith we can have salvation and spend eternity with Him in Heaven. It is not something we must earn, it is a gift. The most precious one we can ever receive. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith_and this not from yourselves, it is the GIFT of God_not by good deeds, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2: 8,9. For without faith, it is impossible to please God. And our faith must be in God's only Son, Jesus Christ.
You were a credit to the uniform, D.S. Hedman. My heart goes out to your
loved ones left behind and may the Lord comfort them as only He can.

Thank you for serving the state of New Mexico and her citizens even though it cost you your life.

I pary that time has helped your family, friends and co-workers cope with your loss. God grant them peace and understanding that one day you will be reunited in heaven.

Good rest, warrior, your job on earth is done. Your brothers and sisters who walk the thin blue line will carry on in your stead.

Help your sister in law enforcement, Susan Kuchma, find her way around up there. Watch over us all.

My thoughts are with all of your loved ones on this anniversary of your EOW. Christmas is fast approaching and I know you will be thought of even more as those that love you dearly will have memories of past Christmas' of you. Continue to keep watch ove rthem and protect them from harm. I have the outside of my home decorated in all blue lights. One of those lights is lit every night in your honor to let you know that you have not been forgotten and for the sacrifice you gave.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Today I was at Godfathers Pizza in Albert Lea MN. There was a woman waiting in line in front of me wearing a NLEOMF tee-shirt. I asked her where she got her shirt beings I was a deputy. She said she got in Washington DC. She said her husbands name was on the shirt because he was killed in the line of duty. She gave me the year he was killed and the state.

It was great talking to you Mrs. Hedman. I hope you and your kids are doing well. We all appreciate the service and sacrafice your husband made for all of us.
