Reflections for Police Officer Robert Francis "Bob" Grim, Sr.

Rest in peace brother...

Officer K.A. Lokey
Norfolk Police Department, Virginia

November 24, 2004

Bob, you've helped me so much since the time we started here. Being a young officer I've looked up to you with great admiration and loved coming to work with you everyday. From chirping you on the nextel when I was in a bind and needed help to listening to the advice you gave me day in and day out about life. You've made a great impact on my life and I can only thank God that I had the chance to know such a great man. I will continue to strive to follow in your footsteps through the ups and downs of this job knowing that you will be watching over me while you keep everyone upstairs laughing with your jokes!

Your friend,

Bob-

The only regret I have between me and you is that I didn't know you longer than I did, though a year on the squad together should be enough to know that your were loved by us as a brother and respected as one of the best cops that we had ever seen or heard about. You made us better cops and better people.

You know, life doesn't seem fair. We all went 10-8 from briefing at 1400 that Friday. Reading BOLO's, chuckling at one of your daily jokes, sharing a story or two...it was every other day. I try to forget about why you didn't come back to the station that night. I think of a time when you made me laugh or gave me advice. There are so many times when you did either one.

One thing is for certain. You will never be forgotten. You still make me laugh and you still mentor me. I know the others feel the same. For those of us left behind, your loss has left a great void that cannot be replaced, but it has pulled us all closer together and reminded us to cherish each other and what we have. Words can't express how grateful we are to have known you, but the memories will.

Peace be with you, my friend, and with your loved ones as well.

Words can not describe the feeling of loss that our family is experiencing. I would like to thank all the police officers and friends that were in attendance for my Uncle Bob’s services. He was the glue that kept the family together over a thousand miles. He was a great officer, but that paled in comparison to his greatness as a family man, friend and person. I will never again take for granted the job that all of you in law enforcement do every day. Please be safe and thank you for all of your help and support.

PAUL GRIM

November 24, 2004

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Bob did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Bob be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Grim's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Bob is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Bob was well respected and well loved.

Thank you Officer Grim for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Our deepest sympathy to Roberts family.
My wife and I were in town to view the area as we will most likely be moving to the Orlando area. We heard of Robert's passing on the news. Our son is a police officer in Northern Kentucky and hearing of events like these always tears into our hearts.
We are praying people and rest assured that the family will be lifted up to the Lord in prayer.
Gods Blessings to you all.

Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Thank you Officer Grim for a job well done. Please continue to watch over us and protect us as only you can. You will forever be at our side and in our hearts.

For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.

There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

We lost one of our own in 2001. I know you will watch over your fellow brother and sisters in blue. To those you left, know that you are not alone. Know that one day you will laugh at a memory you have of this officer who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Know that he is in great company. Bob, say hi to Scott for us...tell him we miss him.

Don’t Wait Up for Me

Honey, I might be late tonight, so don’t wait up for me,
There’s been a theft, a crash or perhaps a burglary.

I thought I’d call to tell you, so you don’t worry about me,
Just go on and go to bed and I’ll wake you up, you’ll see.

“You know I won’t sleep tonight until you’re safe at home,
But I do appreciate the call to assure me on the phone.”

“Since you have been on the job, I seldom sleep that well,
Even though you’re smart and tough, I know you go through hell.”

Honey, I might be late tonight, so don’t wait up for me,
There’s been a death, an officer, who worked with us, you see.

He died doing what he loved so much and what he did so well,
You could see it in his smile, his heart and in the stories that he’d tell.

“I don’t know what to say to you, I cried and felt so sad,
I do know what he meant to you and why you feel so bad.”

“I also know that you’ll go on and patrol out on the street,
And you’ll be kind, but vigilant with everyone you meet.”

Honey, I might be late tonight, so don’t wait up for me,
The world is quiet, no crime or fear, no sorrow for him to see.

Please know that Officer Bob Grim's death will affect a lot of folks he never even knew. I ask God's blessings on his family and friends at this sad time. There is a theory that death is like birth, a passing from one form of "life" to another. In that passing we are frightened at first but we're born to the other side which is much brighter, with lots of room to grow. And on the other side we do indeed grow! God bless you, you're in our prayers. Friend of Officer Brian Haas, EOW April 24, 2004.

Although we were not privileged to know Officer Bob Grim, we are both saddened to lose him, and blessed to have been under his watch. His smile says so much-of his spirit, his love for his work, his love for his fellow officers and his community. I can imagine that Archangel Michael, the patron saint of peace officers, was thrilled to have Officer Grim arrive in Paradise. We hope his family may take a small measure of comfort in this. God bless Officer Grim and those who love and respect him.

When I met Off. Grim he was a life guard
on the beach.
I was a rookie police officer. We talked
about him joining the police dept.
The next thing I knew he told me he had joined the police dept., he was so proud.
He was a good police officer and all around great person.

He will be greatly missed.

I like to end this with what I think
Off. Grim was to a lot of people.

A friend is someone who shares all great moments with you.

A true friend is someone who is there to share all the bad moments too.

Thank you for being a true friend BOB.

I will miss you very much.

I did not know Officer Grim, but he has touched the lives of every one of my instructors. Lt. Muffoletto, a stern and strong individual, almost broke into tears just speaking of Officer Grim. What a man he must have been. My best wishes to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

My wife and I had both known Bob for many years and were deeply saddened at the news of this loss. My wife knew Bob as a School Resource Officer many years ago as she went through school, graduated, and then later in and out of the court system on so many of his cases.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Bob when he joined the Volusia County Sheriff's Office as we served in the honor guard together. He always had a smile for everyone combined with a warm handshake, and was truly an officer's officer. When you saw him in passing you always left feeling just a little bit better. No one will ever forget his magnificent singing voice as we attended memorial services and remembered past fallen officers. Strangely enough, one sad thought I had when I had heard of Bob's passing was, "Who will sing for Bob? Who will carry on this tradition in his place?" No one can fill his shoes or take his place for all of the devotion and caring he demonstrated to the Volusia County community and fellow officers.

Bob was the kind of officer, and set the example, that other officers and "Top Cops" could only hope to be from afar.

Officer Bob Grim is officially 10-7. May God bless him in his rest and bring comfort to his family. As long as he stays within our hearts, he is never truly gone.

Thank you for your friendship. You will never be forgotten.
