Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Timothy Howard Dunn

Tim was my partner in the Metro Gang Unit for the past 2 years. During that time we had became like brothers. On our off time we would get together with our wives and enjoy the time away from work. He was a great officer that knew how to use all his tools to solve cases. Michelle you know that Heather and I are here for you any time.
All officers know that your partner is your lifeline, Tim was mine. One day we will be partners again in a place that we do not have to worry about crime. Tim I miss you and will se you again.

Michelle,

Hi my name is Allison, I wanted to tell you that I am so sorry for what has happened to you and your family. I never knew how much police officers did until my mom married my step-dad Sgt. Andy Boyd. I may be only 13, but I can't imangine how you must feel because if I lost my step-dad, I do not know what I would do because he means the world to me. All my love and prayers goes to you and your family.

While I didn’t know Deputy Dunn personally, I know him in my heart. He was a man who received great joy from being a member of the brotherhood of law enforcement, a bond that only those in law enforcement can fully understand. He was the husband of a loving wife who worried about him if he was late coming home from work. He was the son of a mother who every time she heard that there was an officer down, she wondered if it was her own son. He was a brother of siblings who were proud of his accomplishments and proud to be a part of the same family. You see, I can know Timothy Dunn in my heart because I am the mother of a Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy and I am the sister of a deputy sheriff who was also killed in the line of duty. My prayer is that God will be your Comforter during the very difficult days ahead. My heart truly “knows”.

Deputy Dunn you will never be forgotten. I grow up in Memphis Tenn. and moved to Missouri when I was in the 6th grade because my parents wanted me to be in a safer place. I am now a police officer in Republic Missouri and have been for two years. I am only 23 years old and love me job, as well as I know you did. You will always be remembered for the things you talked about with students and the things you did to protect them. I takes a true man to put on his uniform and go around to schools and talk with students. I am sure you have touched alot of hearts in your short time as a officer. I pray for your family and friends in their time of need and I also pray that your department will keep you in their minds everyday.
I hope one day when it is my time to go that me and you can sit back and trade police stories.

To the family, friends, and co-workers my prayers are with you. I wish there was something that I could say to help you through this. But as everyone knows there isn't anything anyone can say that will help. You will come up with your own way, mine was knowing that Clint loved being a police officer and would not have traded places with anyone.
Deputy Dunn your family will miss you everyday, but we will never forget you. Look Clint up for me tell him we miss him :)

Michelle,
I know at this moment the pain may seem unbearable. Just know that you are not alone. This is a long, tough road for us left behind. Don't let anyone tell you how to grieve. Just take it day by day - or breath by breath - if you have to. You will be in my thoughts.

“When God made Peace Officers….”

When the lord was creating Peace Officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”

And the Lord said, Have you read the spec on this order? A Peace Officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn’t touch, and not wrinkle their uniform.

They have to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day.

They have to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half- eaten meals. And they have to have six pairs of hands.

The angel shook her head slowly and said, “Six pairs of hands….No Way.”

“It’s not the hands that are causing me the problems,” said the Lord, “It’s the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have.”

That’s on the standard model? asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, “May I see what’s in there sir?” (When they already know and wishes they had taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of their head for their partners’ safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, “ You’ll be alright ma’am, when they know it isn’t so.”

“Lord,” said the angel, touching his sleeve,” rest and work tomorrow.”

“I can’t,” said the Lord, “I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on civil service paycheck.”

The angel circled the model of the Peace Officer very slowly, “Can it think?” she asked.

“You bet,” said the Lord, “It can tell you elements of a hundred crimes, recite Miranda warnings in it’s sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five judges to debate the legality of the stop…and still it keeps it’s sense of humor.

This officer also has phenomenal personal control. They can deal with crime scenes painted in HELL, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim’s family’ and then read in the daily paper how Law Enforcement isn’t sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects.

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Peace Officer. “There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model.”

“That’s not a leak,” said the Lord, “It’s a tear.”

“What’s the tear for?” asked the angel.

“It’s for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, and for justice.”

“You’re a genius,” said the angel.

The Lord looked sober. “I didn’t put it there,” he said.

On behalf of the St. Augustine Police
Department I would like to extend our
sympathy to our brothers and sisters
of the Shelby County Sheriff's
Department, and Deputy Dunn's family.
I am a Memphis native and a former
Shelby County Sheriff's Office

the Sheriff's Office has lost another
fine member.

I know that Timothy is in the company
of Sherry, Rupert, and George now, and
although we grieve for them here, they
are in a much better place.

Rest easy Timothy, and know that your
brothers and sisters will continue your
fight, and watch over your family.
