Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Special Agent Edward J. Seitz

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Edward did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Edward be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Agent Seitz's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Edward is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Edward was well respected and well loved.

Thank you Agent Seitz for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

Ed was a special person who made a lasting impression on all of us fortunate enough to know him. We remember with special fondness his tremendous professionalism, humanity and incomparable sense of humor. We are all profoundly saddened at Ed's loss, but deeply proud and honored to have counted him as a colleague and, more importantly, a friend. Sincerest sympathies and condolences to the Seitz family.

Ed Seitz was a special type of individual who touched everyone who had the fortunate opportunity to spend time with him. He was profoundly dedicated to the cause of justice and to fulfilling his mission. We respected him greatly.

Ed was quite simply “always there” for you, no matter the time, circumstance or possible inconvenience to him.

To Joyce, his parents, and his brother, his numerous Canadian friends mourn with you and pray for your strength in this most difficult of times. The world is a far better place because of Ed, and we are so proud to have known him. He will remain in our memory forever.

Sincerely,

Ed is AMERICA'S HERO, Ed went out of his way to help out his fellow citizen, friend, co-worker, fellow federal agent friends etc... list went on. I remember when I first advised him that my wife and I were traveling overseas to pick up our daughter in Romania. He was so excited that he reached into his day planner, pulled out his business card and started writing down all these phone numbers down. He insisted that I call him day or night if my wife and I experienced any problems with the State Department in Bucharest. I will always remember for "helping" in any way he could, whether it was government related business or just listening.

Ed my dear friend, rest in peace.I'll always remember you.

God Bless America!!!!!

A couple of things I'll remember about Ed, he was always there if you called, he never said no, and he always made you feel that he was genuinely glad to see you. Ed will be missed by many and his sacrifices will not be forgotten.

To the family, thank you for sharing Ed with us. Know that you are not alone in your grief and may God wrap you in his arms and may you know the peace that he brings.

It's still hard to believe Ed is gone. I keep expecting him to walk through the door wearing his fedora or hear him answer the phone with his usual "Seitz, go 'head." I don't think I was ever able to buy him a cup of coffee, a drink, or a meal - he was always picking up the tab. He's probably trying to buy St. Peter a cup of coffee right now.

I saw a posting on a website the other day from a soldier who served in Iraq with Ed. I think this soldier, who didn't leave his name, said it better than I ever could: "Ed Seitz was a great American. He wasn't here to harm anyone. He was the happiest man that I have ever met. He had a kind word for everyone he met and always tried to make us soldiers here have a brighter day."

Ed, we will miss you. We will continue on and know that you will be watching over us and your family.

If you ever worked with Ed, you would remember him. Some shyed away from his "bull in a China store" style, but I always loved working with him. My last year at Detroit Metro Airport, I was with Ed on an almost daily basis and it was always entertaining. His dedication and perserverance belied his 14+ years on the job. I'll never forget him tackling the guy getting off an inbound flight from London who was assaulting his wife in a domestic dispute. It was quite a welcome to America. . . I will sorely miss him.

I had the honor of knowing Ed both professionally and personally.

As an investigator, he was the kind of agent every prosecutor would want on the team. He always searched for the truth, and he had a clear understanding of what justice is. Those were the principals that guided him in his work.

As a friend, Ed was simply the best. Words cannot express the void Ed's death leaves in the lives of those privileged enought to have known him well.

Ed will be honored at ...

Having spent 18 years with the Diplomatic Security Service I know first hand how DSS agents like Ed put it on the line everyday in places many of us have never even heard of. The irony in his loss is that Ed spent the last several years investigating the very people (terrorists) who ultimately took his life. He was genuinely one of the nicest guys in the world and should be considered nothing less than a hero. May God bless Ed and his loved ones.

ED was an extremely good natured person. He ALWAYS thought of other people first, and I think that's why he had so many friends. He bought everyone breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He wouldn't let you pay for your own food. He bought everyone gifts all the time. I got flags from two countries I never heard of. When he left for Iraq, he gave me a DSS watch. I found out that he gave these watches or other gifts to a lot of his friends. God took away a little bit of heaven from Earth.

Two months ago, I learned how to deal with the death of someone I loved-a police officer. Although words cannot seem to ease the pain, we know you are watching us from above. Thank you Sir for all of your contribution to making our country as safe as you could. RIP, your brothers and sisters in Law Enforcement will carry on from here.
