It's hard to believe that tomorrow will be two years. With the time difference it will be two years in about an hour. It's still hard to believe you're gone - I keep expecting you to walk through the door with that fedora on your head asking what you can do to help. We'll be sure to hoist a few in your honor at the Emerald Society meeting at the "temple."

I went to FLETC with Ed in 1988, and spent nine years as a DSS agent. The times I ran into Ed in our travels around the world were memorable. He was a very unique guy, and would do anything for you, any time, no questions asked. I last ran into Ed and his wife on a BART train in San Francisco when they were here visiting. Hadn't seen him in some years, but recognized him right away - must have been the hat. Take care Ed, and God bless you.

"Hey Guys, how are you doing?", it seemed yesterday we heard your voice on the compound once more. you established the Local Guard Force for the US Consulate in Shenyang. you are the "Guard Father". Although we worked with Ed only one year, it is evident to us that Ed is a kind, fair and upright person. Ed just like the righteous sword standing the world. We had the fortunate opportunity to work with him in Shenyang. Ed,our friend and brother will be missed forever. Thanks for Mr. John M Young forwarded this website for us.
May God bless Joyce, his parents, and his brother and his friends.

I’m an Italian cousin of Ed and I’ve just received the bad news of his death. This news took some time to get to me, but at the end it arrived...
I never met Edward but I’ve been so touched by his story, due to his courage, due to the understanding of the affection that surrounded him: both expressions of a not ordinary man.
I therefore started to search on the internet all the possible information about Ed. I gathered many pages of documents, that I read carefully, trying to imagine his life and his talent.
As I wrote, I never met Edward and now, after having known him just through the words of the people that shared many moments with him, I do regret that we never met.
But somehow now I can say that I knew him just a little. And this will be enough not to forget Ed, because you cannot forget the people that penetrate one’s soul.
With these few lines I’d like to share the sorrow of Edward’s family and friends, and so would like the whole Viel family in Italy.

Ed,
I wanted you to know that I was thinking about you today, on the side of a mountain in another place I never thought I'd be in a million years. You are still remembered often and I am so grateful you were able to pass on some of your experiences to the CFO crew. We always had fun working with you when we went up to Detroit, those were some great times. I keep in touch with Joyce and I pray for her and your family.
One of the best things someone in our line of work can have are buddies they can reach out to anytime, anywhere and know that they will do anything to assist. I am honored that we had that.
I miss you man. Please look out for us and keep us safe.

I met Ed in 1998. Several of us were sent to Nairobi, Kenya as a DS team responding to the bombing of our Embassy. As a relatively new agent, Ed was kind, helpful and always positive during this very sad time.
I saw Ed just prior to his departure to Baghdad at the training center and wished him a safe tour...
My thoughts and prayers are with Ed's family. I pray that someday, happy memories of Ed replaces the saddnes in your hearts.

I have known Ed for many years, Ed truly loved his job. Ed had severed in many places but love only a few Detroit, Chicago and his beloved Cleveland. Ed had many friends, as he made friends with everyone he met, but his best friend was his wife, I remember the day he told me he was getting married he was so happy. Ed will turly be missed by all of his friends.
