I’m sitting in Valparaiso, IN. This is the closest I’ve been to you in almost 2 decades. I miss you every day. To this day you are the only dad I’ve ever known, I have so many amazing memories with you and I wish you didn’t have to go so soon. I wish you could be here to watch me follow in your footsteps as I start to make my way in life. I hope I get to come see you out there in Pana, IL before I fly home back to Texas. I love you so much, my guardian angel.

Deputy Dirk, I didn't know you as well as your brothers but knowing the family and talking to my best friend (a retired L.E.O. formerly from Arcola), I know your character! We support law enforcement and we help others whenever possible! All my years with the U.S. military and U.S. Border Patrol helped in understanding what the job entailed. I am proud of the legacy you left and the influence you had on others! R.I.P. Your buddies will take it from here!

It’s now been 15 years, since we lost you. I’m 21 now, and I’ve been through part of my College degree, working, and becoming the woman I know you’d be proud of. I’m following my dreams of nursing, because of your legacy. I’m even hoping to become dispatch as I’m working through school! You live on through me everyday. Every step I take in life, I wonder if you’d be proud. I love and miss you so much, always.

It's been 10 long years since Badge #129 was laid to Rest. You ended your watch that day, Dirk. A small ceremony was held in your memory, along with a beautiful floral wreath & a single yellow rose. A prayer was said for your loved ones. You were a wonderful friend to me Dirk. A good listener, and a great FTO. I just want to remind you that you will never be forgotten! Who could possibly forget someone so full of life! Rest in Peace, my Dear Friend

It has been 10 years today that the Unit #129 was laid to rest. You ended your watch, Dirk, far sooner than we all expected. I just want you to know that you will never be forgotten! I valued your friendship. You were an asset to your County. A Special Wreath and a yellow rose has been placed at our Fallen Officer Memorial in Memory of you. A prayer said for you and your loved ones. Rest in Peace, my Dear Friend!

Dirk,

It's been a long time since we lost you brother....but I still think about the friendship that we had. Today my wife was cleaning out our file cabinet and found the letter you wrote to Luke and I about the purple ape. I remember that day I gave Luke the ape and letter and how happy it made him. He is doing well now and I can't thank you enough for being a good friend.

Dirk,

Well its been almost eights years ago since your number was called. I look at your picture everyday when I go to work. You remind me each day to be good to my family and friends. You also remind me to be good to all who need our help, whether friend or foe. When young officers ask me who you are when they see your picture in my office, I say is he was one of the nicest and hardest working deputies I have ever met. There is no doubt in my mind that where ever you are, you are still trying to help someone. I remember picking you up for night shift and you having to bring three bags with you. I remember kidding with asking if you were moving out. I also remember you always smiling no matter what was happening. I often tell young officers about the fight you and I had with a suspect down in Oak Island, Texas....remembering that house was not in the same condition from when we arrived. Boy I was glad you were with me on that day..... Thanks for being a good friend and partner.

Hi Dirk, this is John Pitts. I think about the nights we worked a district together at Pct-5 quite often. Me and Deputy Ron Garner still laugh about you driving your patrol car off in the tall weeds that night at boxcars, amongst alot of other things. You were a blast to work with. I greatly appreciate you being such a good friend to me. When that day comes for me, I will tell you how much. I love you like a brother Dirk, we miss you.

It's been almost 7 years since Dirk left to be with the Lord, and it's actually been about 15 years since I've seen him. I first met him when I was a delivery driver at a local pizza parlor where he was fond of eating his favorite hot pizza sandwiches during his mid-shift lunch breaks, and he was a deputy with the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office at the time and was working the evening shift. I remember a lot of nights spent talking with him about law enforcement and my interest in it. We ran into each other the last time I saw him, and I informed him that I was now with the Sheriff's Office. I never saw him again, and I never knew he quit the Constable's Office and joined the Chambers County Sheriff's Office and never even knew he was already gone until I read the Peace Officers' Memorial website - imagine the surprise and shock I felt! He was a really nice guy and a dedicated peace officer, and I'll always remember him fondly. Rest in peace, Dirk and thank you for your service during your time here on Earth and for being the inspiration for me to join the law enforcement profession.

Hey Dirk,
Well we had another Deputy Killed in the line of
Duty Monday July 13,2009
Talk about the memories it gave me when I found out
about your accident,
Channel 13 had your picture on the New the other day
stating that you were the second Deputy killed in the
line of duty,
It brought tears to my eyes and I choke up,
I called your Dennis and let him know what was going on,
Dirk you are missed by all that knew you,
There's not a day goes by that I don't think of you,
As I look at your pictures and think about the memories
that I have of you,
Now that Shane Dewitter is there with you I am sure yal
will have lot to talk about,
I know that you are watching over us while we are looking
at the Stars and thinking of you,
Miss You Much,
I know that yal are in the Arms of God and his Angels.

Always a Friend
Margie Sowders.

It's hard to believe it's been almost 5 years since you've been gone Dirk. I'll never forget the first time I met you and you couldn't believe I get Alexander's uniform shirts ready every day! You always had a smile on your face and we miss that. Yesterday, another hero from Chambers County joined you in the Kingdom of Heaven. May you and Shane watch over the rest of your brothers and sisters always.
We miss and love you!
