Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Ronald Wayne Ives
Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Thank you Deputy Ives for a job well done. Please continue to watch over us and protect us as only you can. You will forever be at our side and in our hearts.
For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.
IF I KNEW
If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.
There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"
But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.
So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear
Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

An Officers Last Patrol
The Policeman stood and faced God, which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass. Step forward now, Policeman. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To my church have you been true?
The policeman squared off his shoulders and said "No Lord, I guess I ain't, because those of us who carry badges can't always be saints." "I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been violent, because the streets are awfully tough." "
I never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep." "And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears."
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear." "If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don't I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgment of his God.
Step forward now Policeman, you've born your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's Street, you've done your time in hell....

Although I did not work with Ron, we became friends through our school's former DARE officer. They happened to be working traffic together and were presenting a bicycle safety program at our school. The past two-and-a-half years have been time well spent in getting to know Ron. My class and I helped to raise money to support his Patriot Day Bike Tour and in return, Ron was going to do a class presentation for me. I finally called him on his promise and we had it all set for Friday, 10 September 2004 and I don't know who was more excited about it -- him or me.
Ron always had a mischievous twinkle in his eyes that I will never forget. Nor will I forget his warm, friendly smiles, and hugs that were full of love. He was a man loved by many and will also be missed by many. I feel honored and privileged to say that he was my friend.
Thank-you, Ron, for making my life a more rich and fuller one with your friendship, support, and caring.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Ronald did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Ronald be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Deputy Ives' family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.
Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Ronald is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Ronald was well respected and well loved.
Thank you Deputy Ives for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.
Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

Ron,
It's been less than a week since you left us. I still can't get over the fact that you are gone. From the first day I met you and had the honor of working with you 8 1/2 years ago, until the last time I saw and spoke to you, (the day you died) you never changed. Honorable.
You were always smiling. Always happy. Always eager to help. I remember how excited you were when you made the motor squad. I remember how excited you were when you became a motor instructor. After you had your first crash, I remember how frustrated you were to be on light duty. But typical Ronnie, you would smile about it and express your excitement about getting back on the bike because you "loved it so much."
You had an ability to make everybody who knew you happy. You were a bright star for the Sheriff's Department, but more importantly, a bright star for the Rancho Cucamonga traffic division. Everybody loved working with you. Everybody. Your passing has made the traffic division that much more closer. In addition, you have made the station closer. The Rancho station will go on, but it will never be the same. There is a void without you. But it comforts me personally, to have been honored to spend the time with you that I did. Your smile is etched forever in my memory. I also take comfort knowing that although it is very tragic you are gone, you died doing what you loved. Our loss is great, but Heaven needed another Angel. Ronnie, you are that Angel. Thank you for all that you have done. Thank you for touching so many lives. I know you are watching down on us. We will love you forever and will never ever forget you.

Ron was a great man and a good friend. I meet him for the first working at Sport Chalet in Rancho and we then found ourselves in the same scuba diving class at the store. I knew Ron for about 4 years, I went diving with him, and talked to him about the Department. He helped me out, by pushing me to go through the Academy. That was about the best thing that I have ever done in my life and its all because of Dep. Ives. You will be missed greatly.

Dear Ives Family,
Our heartfelt condolences to each of you during this terribly sad time. Our family knows what it is like to loose someone serving and protecting the community. Our nephew Officer Michael Gordon lost his life on 8/8/04 while serving on the Chicago PD. He will be always and forever be missed. We knew Ron before he joined the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, when he worked assembling tow trucks for us at our company in Ontario, CA. You could not ask for a better employee. Always punctual, organized, a born leader with an infectious smile that was ever present. Ron decided to make a career change and become a Deputy Sheriff, we were sorry to see him leave but knew that he had a higher calling in life. Our paths crossed from time to time, it was obvious his choice was the the right one. Ron loved what he was doing in his career. We never imagined that our paths would cross again on the pages of this memorial site. Ron as they say your watch is over, your duty here is done, rest in peace friend.
