Reflections for Correctional Officer Scott Edward Bryant

I wish I could put into words just how much your expressions of kindness and thoughtfulness mean to our family and how much those words have helped us get through this extremely tough time in our lives. I just can't tell you how much we miss Scott -- his smile, his ornery laugh and his hugs. It has been a tough summer for us, but we all know he is watching over us, taking care of us and watching out for each of you. Having grown up in a law enforcement family (father police officer for over 30 years and a brother on the Burlington, Iowa PD), we completely understand the love, support and bond that exists between law enforcement. Keep each other safe and don't forget to hug your spouse and kids and tell them how much you love them every single day. Scott made sure he did!

Often over-quoted, but true in the realest sense of the word in this case: "No one has greater love than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." Grace and peace to family, friends and coworkers in their time of unimaginable loss and grief.

Ofc. Bryant and Family,
Sir, I wanted first to say that we are so Honored in our Law Enforcement Family to have brothers like you. There is never justification for losing a Brother but you have truly lived up to the Honor of our calling. Not only for your sacrafice but for the bravery that you showed everday of your life here. Seperation is not eternal but the life God gives to his Angels and those who love him is. There is no greater sacrafice than for you being willing to lay down your life for another. That is what our Lord said the true meaning of this life is. Until we meet again please guide us and help us to show the bravery and honor that comes from the heart of HEROS, like you. August 20, 2004

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"
