My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Timothy did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Timothy be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Laird's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Timothy is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Timothy was well respected and well loved.

Thank you Officer Laird for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, Health, and Happiness!

What a horrible call to be dispatched to. Fortunately for the citizens of Indianapolis, there are officers like Timothy Laird, who rushed towards this dangerous situation, instead of away from it. Talk about courage!
To Tim's daughter - your father was a very brave and honorable man.

I hope the other officers involved in this incident recover from their physical and emotional wounds. You are all heros and a credit to your department and to police officers everywhere.

"A Toast to the Fallen Officer/Firefighter/Medic"

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, our brother Jake is no longer with us...

We raise our glasses, like a royal crown, for sadly this brave officer was too soon taken down...

A prayer for his family as we gather tonight, and hope we never have to toast again through God's enduring might.

"I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one, I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when day is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun, Of happy memories that I leave behind when the day is done."
Jake you will be in our hearts and minds forever! We will miss you our blue angel!

Your story brings back a terrible incident that happened to me several years ago with similar circumstances. I was dispatched to a man walking down the street brandishing a rifle as well. The bad guy in my incident fired his rifle at me once I confronted him. He 'squared off' on me, firing his rifle at least 2 times, and I fired back. Luckily for me, my bullets landed home and his did not.....Your death under these circumstances again made me appreciate what I have and remember how lucky I've been during the shootout I just mentioned as well as 2 others.
My deepest thoughts go to your family, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time. I hope your partners recover quickly also. Salute to you, as well as them for protecting the society that often doesn't appreciate the sacrifices made by our police officers.

This is my first time, since I have been on the department, that a fellow brother has fallen. It's sad to say, that I will have other sister's and brother's who will fall throughout my law enforcement career. However, the night that Timothy Laird was killed, is a night I will never forget. I listened to the whole thing on my radio, and no civilian will ever know how scary it is and was to hear officers pleading to get help to them right away, because of an injury they, or a fellow officer has received. I would like to let Mrs. Laird, and her daughter know, that you are not in this alone. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Keep your head up, and know that you always have that special angel by your side....Rest In Peace Brother Laird!!!!

Jake I heard you on the radio announcing you were shot. Though I never knew you I will never forget your voice. I pray that God comforts and gives peace to your family and friends. I feel the pain as though I knew you but even though we never exchanged a "hello" you are still my brother. I will see you in heaven. RIP Timothy Jacob Laird.

Jake: You have been a friend for many years. I can remember back in school how your smile was contagious and you just lite up a room by walking into it! You served your country and the citizens of Indianapolis with pride and courage that fateful Wednesday morning. You ran unafraid and undaunted into the face of danger and gave the ultimate sacrifice. You are a true hero in todays world, and someone that your daughter, Kaylee, can be proud of. It was an honor to be a friend and a co-worker. You will be greatly missed my friend. I'll see you in heaven one day!
