Reflections for Police Officer Edwin Hernandez
I said a little prayer today for Police Officer Hernandez and his family. He may be gone but never forgotten. He will always be a New York HERO.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

When I have no one to turn to
And I am feeling kind of low,
When there is no one to talk to
And nowhere I want to go,
I search deep within myself
It is the love inside my heart
That lets me know my Angels are there
Even though we are miles apart.
A smile then appears upon my face
And the sun begins to shine.
I hear a voice, so soft and sweet
Saying, 'Everything will be just fine'
It may seem that I am alone
But I am never by myself at all.
Whenever I need my Angels near
All I have to do is call.
Eddie, you are truly missed, but will always be in our hearts.
Love you,

I had to stop and leave a reflection. Even though the only time we met I was being stopped on the HOV by you for speeding. I remember thinking "I'm done" when I saw this huge cop with a stern look coming towards me. When you saw my shield in my wallet you asked me for credentials. After that youasked how long I was on the job. When I said 5 yrs you smiled and told me I was still a New Jack. With that you told me "Slow it down a little SON" gave me a smirk and walked away without giving me a ticket. About 3 days later you passed. Now its been a little over a yr. I pray for you and your family everytime I stop by here and see your memorial. God Bless and keep the Highways in heaven safe. Thanks for that day.Your Brother in Blue.

Dear Edwin
On your first aniversary in heaven.I hope god is watching over you and you in turn are watching over your brothers in blue.I never met you in life, but I have met your family after you passing.First at the NYS Shields Memorial on 05/01 and then at the NYS FOP Ceremony on 05/07. In D.C for Police Week,I had the Honor to escort your signed picture to its place on the wall and then to safeguard its return to NYS,first to the NYS ceremony in Albany on the 05/17 and then to the Nassau County Ceremony on the 18th.As fate would have it,I know a NYS Trooper whose brother not only is a Suffolk Officer and a Highway Patrolman, but is the one that had bought your old house!
Small world.I intrusted the picture to him to escort it the final miles to your famliy.I also was able to present an album of all the Fallen Officers from NYS for 2004 to your family on behalf of the NYSFOP.
Rest in Peace Edwin

We love you and miss you everyday. We send our prayers out to Cora, Tania, and little Eddie. You were like a father, a brother, and best friend to me. I always looked up to you while growing up next door. Then as I got older I looked to you for advice, leadership, and friendship. I always wanted to be like "Ed". My girlfriends always thought you were crazy and you were. My wife Renee knew you were the best from the time she ate all of your cashews and drank your Green Hornets! I learned a lot about life from you and your family. I remember every moment. You still and always will inspire me. We know our daughter Olivia would just fall in love with you!
Love,

The Dept Had its ceremony today, Ed. You were the topic of choice, as usual, being the friend, cop, and family guy you are. Kurt and Rocky let me be the Sentry above your stone, Bless them. I did my best, tried to stand tall and proud. (Kurt helped me with that).
Go well Ed,
I'll give my best to do it like you did.
