Reflections for Police Officer Christy Jo Dedman

Family and Friends of Officer Dedman,
I am truly sorry for your loss. Such a tragic and senseless loss; my dad was killed in the line of duty in a similar manner. You are in the prayers of many. I pray that God comforts you in this time of sadness and gives you peace knowing that her service and sacrifice will NEVER be forgotten.

My thoughts and prayers to you,

CHRISTY, I REGRETFULLY SAY THAT I NEVER EVEN KNEW YOU LEFT THE T.B.I., TO JOIN METRO. I REMEMBER YOU AS THE LAW ENFORCEMENT INFORMATION COORDINATOR. THOUGH I HAVEN'T SEEN OR SPOKEN TO YOU IN A LONG TIME, I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT A WONDERFUL PERSON YOU ARE AND HOW MUCH YOU DID TO ASSIST THE MANY OFFICERS THAT WENT THROUGH T.B.I. TRAINING COURSES. YOU ARE DEEPLY MISSED AND FOREVER REMEMBERED.

THERE IS NO DEATH
There is a plan far greater than the plan you know;
There is a landscape broader than the one you see.
There is a haven where storm-tossed souls may go-
You call it death-we, immortality.

You call it death-this seeming endless sleep;
We call it birth-the soul at last set free.
"Tis hampered not by time or space-you weep.
Why weep at death? "Tis immortality.

Farewell, dear voyageur-'twill not be long.
Your work is done-now may peace rest with thee.
Your kindly thoughts and deeds-they will live on.
This is not death-'tis immortality.

Farewell dear voyageur-the river winds and turns;
The cadence of your song wafts near to me,
And now you know the thing that all men learn:
There is no death-there's immortality.

TO THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE NASHVILLE-METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT AND TO THE FAMILY OF OFFICER CHRISTY DEDMAN,I EXTEND MY SYMPATHY AT YOUR GREAT LOSE. IT IS SUCH A TRAGEDY WHEN ANYONE LOSES THEIR LIFE, BUT FOR A POLICE OFFICER TO LOSE HIS/HER LIFE IN SUCH A SENSELESS MANNER, MAKES IT EVEN WORSE. MY DEPARTMENT FEELS YOUR PAIN, AS WE TO HAVE JUST LOST AN OFFICER, IN A CARELESS/RECKLESS ACT. I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT YOUR LOSE IS FELT IN OUR DEPARTMENT TOO. I DID NOT KNOW OFFICER DEDMAN, BUT I DID, BECAUSE SHE WAS A POLICE OFFICER, AND THAT MADE HER MY SISTER ( ONLY POLICE OFFICERS UNDERSTAND). I PLAN TO PAY MY RESPECTS AT THE FUNERAL IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. OFFICER DEDMAN, GO REST HIGH ON THAT ETERNAL MOUNTAIN, YOUR SHIFT ON EARTH IS THROUGH. GOD PLEASE BLESS US ALL AS WE DO ARE BEST TO PROTECT AND SERVE OTHERS.

Even though I only knew Christy for less than a year, I called her a friend. She was and always will be a sister in blue to me. I know that she was a very good, and dedicated officer, and she will truly be missed by me, her friends and family, and the citizens of Nashville...Christy had signed up to do the "Police Unity Tour" this year in May, but in talking with her she had changed her mind to ride due to her being a "New" Officer...She felt that it wasen't right to take time off so soon after starting in Nashville...She said that she'd ride next year with us....Now I, and my fellow brother and sister Officers will take pride in riding on her behalf next year, and to see her name placed on the wall...Christy,...You will never be for forgotten!!!!

As a police chaplain with APD, about 100 miles South of Nashville, I had to try to say the right things when we lost two beloved brothers on January 2, 2004. To the family of Officer Dedman, it is all I need to know that Christy served with honor and respect in an honorable but little respected vocation. Take solice, and dare I say pride, that she died doing what she loved, there are so many of us who may not be able to say that in our last days. Words are hollow at this point but as family, fellow brothers and sisters and friends struggle to say the proper words of comfort please understand that we cannot say what may truly give comfort but I personally pray each day that the day will come when I can truly give comfort in a situation like this. Please know that God is with you and He will comfort you in the future. Please allow me to take a small part of the hurt as every fellow brother and sister in blue will do. We honor your loss and will forever remember our department "just a few miles to the North".

God bless you Christy for your committment and loyalty to the people of Nashville. You will be greatly missed. I pray for the family, friends, and fellow officers. It takes a special person to be a police officer...one that puts others before themselves and has an intense desire to "help". Never take for granted the time that we have, the here and now. Christy you will forever be in our hearts. God bless.

Christy rest in peace. Your goal was finally met and I don't think I have ever seen anyone so happy to meet her goal. When you became an officer it was as if you blossomed and it was truly good to see you so very happy. Your family will be in my prayers for I know they have a hard road ahead of them. May God Bless You... you will be missed.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but a two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.
