"... so angels walked unknown on earth,
but once they flew were recognized."

Carlos was like a dad to me growing up.
I spent many days at the Owens home, summer trips.
Carlos you gave me great memories, that I will carry in my heart forever.
You are loved and missed dearly.
To his wonderful family, my thoughts and prayers are with you always.

Carlos,
Several months have gone by since this tragic day in our city, but I often think of you when I pick up the radio in the afternoon and 438 Day calls me for something. I hear your voice no matter who is working the car.
Yes, several months have passed, but you have not been forgotten.

Curly, it seem like it was yesterday when we will argue about the way you gave me Unit 438 at shift change. The car will be dirty with no gas in it.You also will leave your cigarettes and empty coffee cups in the cup holder. When I finshed arguing the only then you will say is " Be careful Stepfarne". Thank you so much for everything. You are my friend, my brother, and my angel.

Carlos i still rember the last time we talked, and all you wanted to do was to retire and spend time with your grandchildren. I'll miss seeing you in the mornings drinking your coffee just before rollcall, you are truly missed by our family (west precinct). My prayers are with you and your family.

I knew "Curly" for only 5 years but when I think about the kind of police officer I want to be, he's the model. He was truly a "cop's cop." He loved the job and he was very simply the best. I'll miss him rubbing my bald head "for good luck." Whenever I hear "438" on the radio, I'm sure I'll hear his distinctive voice echoing in the background. West Precinct will not be the same without Carlos.

Dear Owens family and friends,
I am sorry to hear about your loss. Only a coward would shoot a police officer. I am sorry that you lost so many officers in one day. Please take some comfort in two verses from the Bible: "Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted." Matt. 5:4 and "Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the Children of God." Matt. 5:9. God Bless.

To the family of Officer Carlos Owens: My husband knew Officer Owens but had'nt seen him in several years. He said that he was a great man and he was so grief stricken when he heard that he'd been killed. I am so sorry he was taken the way he was. It's so hard to imagine what he was feeling at that final moment of his life. I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone by saying that I wish this NEVER HAPPENED. Again, I am so very sorry. My prayers are with you all.

In November last year I came to Birmingham to film a report on gun crime in Alabama. I met many of Birmingham's police officers and I was truly impressed by the dedication and bravery that was displayed. I was terribly shocked to read of the dreadful events that led to three officers being killed. My thoughts go out to all of the family and friends and colleagues affected and my prayers are with you all.

As I was watching the news for updates on the murder of my son-in-law, Ofc Mark Sawyers (E.O.W. 6-5-04) of the Sterling Hts MI police department, breaking news came on from Birmingham, AL. I watched in disbelief and horror that three more officers were gunned down. What is going on in this world?
Now there are three more families grieving, more widows, and more fatherless children left to cope with these outragous crimes. My heart breaks for all of you. My family knows all too well the agony you are going through.
May God help us all.

The tide recedes but leaves behind bright seashells on the sand. The sun goes down but gentle warmth still lingers on the land.
The music stops and yet it echoes on sweet refrains....for every joy that passes, something beautiful remains..
May your memories bring comfort and keep your loved one close to your heart. I'm very sad for the PD that has lost three officers, my heart and my deepest respect to you all fine officers.God bless.

Another sad day for law enforcement has come to pass. For the family of Officer Owens, know that his coworkers will forever be there for you. Know that others have been in your shoes and know your pain. For the coworkers and especially the surviving officer, be at peace. Know that everything you could have done, you did. No one knows why these things happen. All we can do from day to day is fulfill our civic duty and pray that we all go home at the end of the shift. Trust in God to help you through this difficult time. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.
