Reflections for Sergeant Andy Thaddeus Bailey
To SGT BAILEY A HERO IN BLUE:
Rest easy now Warrior, rest easy. Your brothers and sisters have the watch.
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my Church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
Can't always be a Saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my work was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep,
I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was silence all around the Throne
Where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

Never Let A Dream Die
As sure as you were born,
You'll innervision a personal goal
Seeking truth of smallet dreams
Locked in the corner of your soul.
As sure as you will live,
Stumblingblocks will fall your way
But if there's self-belief and faith
Your path will clear at the end of day.
And, as sure as your life will end,
Time in its haste will have rolled by.
Will it find you an unhappy failure
Or pleased with a dream you did not let die?
Sgt. Bailey your dream will live on!

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Andy did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Andy be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Sergeant Bailey's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.
Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Andy is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Andy was well respected and well loved.
Thank you Sergeant Bailey for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.
Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

What a tragic end to a long and distinguished career....
My deepest thoughts go out to your family, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time. It never seems fair that we die at the most inopertune time---you were planning your retirement, and then your fateful day comes. I wish I'd been there with you....I would have either taken care of the guy for you or fallen beside you. Thank you for your many years of service!

TO: The family;loved ones;friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER'S PRAYER:---O, gentle Lord! Keep the day/night watch with me. As I begin my tour of duty,I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work, endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone.May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent on me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think that no one really cares and that I am taken for granted. Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are garteful for my presence. Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance.Lord,I ask that I may return safely after my tour of duty to my loved ones, and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer;and after my tour of duty is over here on earth, may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well.AMEN.***REST IN PEACE*** Sent to you by the father of First Class Officer J.D.Koeppen,Capital City Raleigh NC,Trooper D.C.Koeppen,N.J.State Police and Cadet Officer A.M.Koeppen,Wilmington N.C.
