Reflections for Police Officer Darren Glen Medlin

Merry Christmas, Darren

December 23, 2004

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

You would have been proud of your boys at the GPD, they were working this weekend and enforcing the "move over" law.

NEVER FORGOTTEN!!

Darren,
I am honored to have been able to work with you and supervise you for the short time that I did.
You are a true professional and a truly awesome individual. Your attention to duty and ability to do the job well speaks highly of you.

I remember in the days just before your accident backing you up on 114 and watching you do your thing. You treated everyone fairly and you loved doing your job. I also remember seeing you stuck (high centered) in your camaro, but I knew that other officers from the Airport had already stopped to umm, help. Yea Right!!! They were laughing with you. You will be missed, may God Bless you, Gina and your children and your brothers and sisters at Grapevine PD...We all know that you will be watching, protecting us from above, as your TRUE WATCH has just Begun!!! Rest in Peace Brother!!

TO THE FAMILY OF OFFICER MEDLIN:
MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY GOES OUT TO EACH & EVERY ONE OF YOU. I CAN TRULY SAY I FEEL YOUR PAIN--YOU SEE--I LOST MY ONLY BROTHER LT GREG MEDLIN. HE DIED 11/2/03 OF INJURIES HE RECEIVED 9/25/03 WHILE RESPONDING TO A CALL. HE HAD BEEN WITH THE DESOTO COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPT FOR 10 YEARS. HE LOVED HIS JOB JUST AS I'M SURE OFFICE DARREN MEDLIN DID. MY PRAYERS & THOUGHTS ARE WITH EACH & EVERY ONE OF YOU BECAUSE I HAVE WALKED IN YOUR SHOES AND I KNOW HOW PAINFUL IT IS. GOD BLESS.

Darren,

Happy 4th of July. Know that all the police family is out in force this holiday to seek and remove the careless, reckless and heartless DWI DRIVERS.

We will try to do you a good job!

Kelly-

As your neighbors, Dave and I are stunned (to say the LEAST) about your brother's death. It brings tears to my eyes to think of the sense of loss you can't hide from.
God has a plan, and needed Darren. We miss seeing your smiling faces in the front yard and hope that your sorrow is comforted through all of the wonderful praises being given to an officer who gave his life...to protect us.

My prayers are that officer Medlin's family will rely on God for your strength during this heart wrenching time. You may go through a period when you are mad at God, as I did, but just remember He is the only one that sees the big picture. Only He knows why this happened.

The pain of losing a loved one, especially a child is unbearable. Even though it has been almost ten months since our nightmare began, it still seems as though it was yesterday.
They keep telling me it will get better and I keep wondering "When"?

Officer Darren, please tell Greg hi for me and that I love him and you.

Darren,
You may not have known it, but you made such a huge impact on my husband. He thought so much of you and looked up to you in a way that he would never say out loud. You assisted in making him the officer that he is. You will be greatly missed and are truly a HERO. My deepest sympathy to your wife and children, along with your brothers and sisters of the Grapevine Police Department. God Bless.

To the family of Darren Medlin; Sometimes you do not have to know each other to know each others pain. I too lost my 32 year old son as he was making a routine traffic stop on I-40 to a drugged truck driver who ran over his patrol car and killed him. This was one time when I truly questioned if God's grace was sufficient and He proved it was. May the same grace He has showered on me fill your future with His peace and comfort and may your family know that our family is praying for you. In Christian love

I heard on the news of another fallen brother and was upset to know that I again was placing another shroud over my badge.I am truly sorry for your loss. May god look over your family and friends and lend them a shoulder to cry on.

June 22, 2004

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Grapevine Dept and the family of Officer Medlin. It's a terrible thing that people are so careless and have very little regard for other people's lives. Our two towns have been hit hard in the last couple of weeks and I am truly sorry for your loss. God Bless.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Darren did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Darren be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Medlin's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Darren is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Darren was well respected and well loved.

Thank you Officer Medlin for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

Gina and girls-
We love you and will continually pray for you. Darren was an outstanding officer and will be greatly missed.

"Heavenly Father, today gather each of your precious ones into Your mighty comforting arms who have known this kind of pain. Whether they are very young or old, where the wounds of loss of those they loved and needed are still open and bleeding, come in with Your oil and Your wine, and bind up their broken hearts today. May each one of them find in You the comfort, assurance and healing that only You can bring. In Jesus' name. Amen"

Darren,
I'm grateful that I was one of those lucky enough to know you and what an awesome person you are. You would have been shocked to see the effect you had on so many people who will remember and miss you forever. Watch over my boys & keep 'em safe!

And now we play the final showdown scene
As the credits roll a sad song starts to play.
And my heart is sinking like the setting sun
Setting on the things I wish I'd done.
It's time to say goodbye to yesterday.
This is where the cowboy rides away.
