Richie,
We send our deepest condolences to you and the kids. We were fortunate to have had the opportunity to share time with you when Dave was with OPD and we will continue to keep you all in our prayers.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Dave did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Dave be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Deputy Grant's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.
Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Dave is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Dave was well respected and well loved.
Thank you Deputy Grant for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.
Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

A couple years ahead of me in high school in the 1970's, Dave always took the time to stop and say hello. He was just extremely nice and well liked by many. His good nature and friendliness have never been forgotten. He will be missed.

Dear Family and Friends,
I would like to say I am truly very sorry for your loss. But know in time things will be ok. I remember Dave when I was a Police Explorer for the Sonora Police Department. He would come and teach at some of our meetings. He was a great man, and be missed greatly.

Richie & Family;
It is with the deepest regards and sadness that I write this. May God keep you in his arms during this very tough time. Dave will always be loved and remembered for all that he did for others. He is a beloved friend and a wonderful human being. Death but supplies the oil for the inextinguishable lamp of everlasting life. Dave is life and will always be in my heart.

Dave Grant was a long time friend of mine. I worked with his little brother at a service station in 1977-78 and remember when he graduated fromt he academy. He was so excited to be a police officer.I was really happy when he came back from Oceanside. His sister Cathy and I had kids together in child care. Dave always looked out for me and his friends. He even gave me his private number (which I still have in my wallet)when he found out I had been abused by my ex many years ago.
That was the kind of man he was. Strong, big in heart and soul. I am still in shock and so is the community.
I will miss you so much Dave..
Cathy, Bill, to his wife and kids...
many many hugssssss and prayers for you all.....

Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Thank you Deputy Grant for a job well done. Please continue to watch over us and protect us as only you can. You will forever be at our side and in our hearts.
For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.
IF I KNEW
If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.
There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"
But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.
So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear
Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

I had the privilege of working "motors" with Dave Grant in the early 1980's in Oceanside. I will never forget how proud he was to be an Oceanside Police Officer and particularly a motor officer. From the pursuits, to the "heater vest" Dave wore on cold mornings, to the time he forgot to put the side stand down while parking his motor in front of the coffee shop, I'll never forget the times working with Dave. Although Dave was an excellent street cop and consummate professional, rarely did you see him without a grin on his face and you just knew he was about to crack a joke or make a funny comment. Dave's commitment to duty and to his family should be an inspiration to us all. God Bless, my friend.

To the family, friends, and co-workers of Deputy Dave Grant: In this time of immeasurable sorrow, know that Dave is now at peace. He is now in heaven with his mom, dad, and brother who all went before him. He was like a brother to me, and I will never forget him. Job well done Dave. Rest in peace.

"Though I walk throught the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me" Psalm 23:4
Slowly at first but most assuredly, The Lord provides comfort and release from the darkness. He gives light. He leads us out. Eventually, we escape the valley of the shadow.
To The Grant family, what an awesome man you have shared with us. He has touched so many lives. Thank You.

I have had the privilege of working with Deputy Dave Grant since June 2001. I started supervising parolees in the Tuolumne County area and did not know any of the Law Enforcement community in the area. Dave was one of the first to make me welcomed in the Tuolumne County Sheriffs Office. Dave would always have a smile on his face and make it a point to great me, with a hello and what are you doing.
In 2003 we both responded, along with other officers to an officer needs help call, where shots had been fired at a fellow officer. The officer came on the radio and said his vehicle had been struck with bullets and seemed more worried about his vehicle being hit then himself being shot at. Dave came back on the radio and said don't worry we can fix the car. Dave's words seemed to calm the officer down some.
I will miss working with this man, but I will have the memories for a life time.

Although your watch physically ended on May 31, 2004 , I am sure your spirit, strength, commitment, and your smile, will continue your watch over your family, friends, and all of your fellow officers of the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department for eternity. You will not be forgotten. That morning you were called to your duty that you always did so valliantly. I know your family and your community will always be proud of the years of dedicated service you provided. I have not lived in the area for a couple of years, although, Deputy Grant will always stand out in my memories. To all Sonora area residents who visit this site, come out on Sunday June 6,2004 downtown on Washington St., remove your hats, and honor the Father, Friend, Dedicated Officer, and Hero, that will be escorted to heaven.
