Day is done,
gone the sun.
From the hills,
from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well,
safely rest,
God is nigh.

Godspeed to you and your family.

Sgt, Ashley God speed. You are a prime example of what the job is about. That little girl will remember you for the rest of her natural life and love you for the help you gave her, in giving your life for her.

I thought long and hard about what I could say here that would be a fitting tribute for what this Officer had stood for. Then I read a post from Cpl. Bryan Taylor of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office that states in part "Sgt. John Ashley you gave the ultimate for a deed that others, that don't understand what we do, would think was trivial.... You sir are truly what law enforcement is about. A 100% effort for the smallest task." I couldnt agree more, nor could I have said it any better. God bless you Sgt John Ashley and may your family and friends find peace.

Although I didn't know you well. We shared many a cup at 27th and P. Nothing more than a nod or what's up. You told me once how much you loved your job and you couldn't believe that we got paid to do this. Was always happy to see you back me up. Thank you. You will be missed.

Sgt. John Ashley you gave the ultimate for a deed that others, that don't understand what we do, would think was trivial. You tried to give a little girl her best friend back. You sir are truly what law enforcement is about. A 100% effort for the smallest task. My sympathy to the family and friends of Sgt. Ashley. To the members of the Metropolitan Police Department keep up the good work and besafe.

I’M FREE

AUTHOR UNKNOWN

DON’T GRIEVE FOR ME, FOR NOW I’M FREE
I’M FOLLOWING THE PATH GOD LAID FOR ME.
I TOOK HIS HAND WHEN I HEARD HIM CALL.
I TURNED MY BACK AND LEFT IT ALL.
I COULD NOT STAY ANOTHER DAY.
TO LAUGH, TO LOVE, TO WORK OR PLAY.
TASKS LEFT UNDONE MUST STAY THAT WAY.
I FOUND A PEACE AT CLOSE OF DAY.
IF MY PARTING HAS LEFT A VOID,
THEN FILL IT WITH REMEMBERED JOY.
A FRIENDSHIP SHARED, A LAUGH, A KISS,
AH YES, THESE THINGS I TOO WILL MISS.
BE NOT BURDENED WITH TIMES OF SORROW;
I WISH YOU THE SUNSHINE OF TOMORROW.
MY LIFE’S BEEN FULL, I’VE SAVORED MUCH;
GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD TIMES,
A LOVED ONE’S TOUCH.
PERHAPS MY TIME SEEMED ALL TOO BRIEF;
DON’T LENGTHEN IT NOW WITH UNDUE GRIEF;
LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS AND SHARE WITH ME;
GOD WANTED ME NOW.
HE SET ME FREE.

TO:The family;loved ones;friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER'S PRAYER:--- O, gentle Lord.Keep the day/night wtach with me.As I begin my tour of duty, I ask your protection from all mental,physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work,endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent upon me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think no one really cares and that I am taken for granted.Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence. Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers; and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord,I ask that I may return safely,after my tour of duty,to my loved ones and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer;and after my tour of duty is over here on earth,may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well.AMEN.*** REST IN PEACE*** Sent to you by the father of First Class Officer J.D.Koeppen ,Capital City Raleigh NC and Trooper D.C.Koeppen,NJ State Police.

I worked with Ashley at the 7th District while I was in patrol and he was in the Detectives office. Like most investigators and detectives, he had a lot on his plate. But if you ever had a question or needed some assistance with something, he would stop whatever he was doing to help you. And if he was really busy, and said he'd get back to you, he always did. He was approachable and personable. He was down to earth and humble. When we heard he had made the Sergeant's list and was getting promoted, of course, we were happy for him because he worked hard and deserved it. But it's always a little hard and a little sad, even, to see the 'good one's' move on to bigger and better opportunities. He was an asset to the 7th District. And an asset to the Department. And will be missed by a lot of people.
