Reflections for Lieutenant Vickie Salassi Wax

On the 6th anniversary of Lieutenant Wax's death, we honored her service in our patrol briefing by reading her entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Lieutenant Wax is not forgotten.

Scrappy,
It'll be 6 yrs. tomorrow since God called you home and I'm still feeling a bit selfish and wishing you were still here. I think about you everyday. I always share your life and wisdom with everyone I meet. I know you are watching over all of us and resting in the comfort of God's hands. I miss you dearly.

You are not forgotten Vickie. You led not only with words but your actions. There are several on this dept. that owe you for your direction and teaching words.

We didn't forget. We won't forget. Those of us there on that fateful night will never forget.

And though five years have passed, rest peacefully knowing we still carry on the watch.

Vicki

I think about you and miss you. I cannot pass 3rd District without thinking of you. There is a tree planted at the backdoor of the roll call room in your memory with a plague. It looks really nice.

Thanks for the memories. Rest in Peace my friend.

Vickie
I just wanted to say "Thanks" for helping me with that Civil Service test. It wasn't easy, but when I asked for you help, the outcome was a passing grade. When I head down home and pass your final resting place, I glance your way and smile, because we made each other smile with the talks we had. Sorry I didn't get to saying this earlier, but you are missed. Thanks for being Vickie.

Rest in Peace Lt. Wax- from a 25 year civilian and military police vet, who stared death in the eye a time or two.
You risked your life everyday to keep Baton Rouge safe, your death was not in vain.

My sincere regrets and condolences to the family, particularly Willie Wax. I worked with Willie at Olympus Insurance Company, BR, LA after leaving E.B.R. Parish Sheriff's Ofc. It is with deepest regret I receive the news of Vicki's death; my family and I liked her very much and it's a great shock to read this article

I was absolutely stunned to hear of this tragic news. In 1986, Detective Wax helped me to recover from being the victim in a fraud/forgery case. I was so appreciative of her help and I have never forgotten her. I never will. Rest in Peace Officer.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It will be 2 years since your tour of duty ended. Thank you for your long and dedicated service to law enforcement. I know your loved ones still think of you every hour of every day and their hearts will be broken forever. Even though the individual that caused all this pain will eventually meet his maker to atone for his action, it will not bring you back to your loved ones. Such a sensless act that has changed the lives of your loved ones forever. There are no magic workds I can offer them to help ease their pain except that you are a true hero and for them to keep your memory alive. Keep watch over them and wrap your wings around them to help ease some of their grief. You will never be forgotten.
