I feel so very bad for this officer and his family. 2 years ago I was involved in a traffic collision with a big rig. Officer Steiner was the first officer on the scene. I could not get out of my vehicle due to the impact to the vehicle and injuries sustained. While waiting for the rescue personnel, Officer Steiner got into the back seat of the vehicle and held my hand so that I would know I was not alone. After being transported to the hospital, he came and sat in the ER room with me until my family arrived. I will never forget this gentleman, who added compassion to duty.

I heart goes out for Officer Steiner, his family, and the California Highway Patrol. I know he's in a better place now patroling the heavens and watching over all of us.
Creating a Peace Officer:
When the Lord was creating peace officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said,
"You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."
And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order? A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform.
"He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day.
"He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands... no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."
"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, "May I see what's in there, sir?" (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken
that accounting job.) "Another pair here in the side of his head for his partners' safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, 'You'll be all right ma'am, when he knows it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."
"I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck."
The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly, "Can it think?" she asked.
"You bet," said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes;
recite Miranda warnings in its sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest
a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to
debate the legality of the stop... and still it keeps its sense of humor.
This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't
sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the peace
officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."
"That's not a leak," said the lord, "it's a tear."
"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice."
"You're a genius," said the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there," he said.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Thomas did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Thomas be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Steiner's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.
Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Thomas is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Thomas was well respected and well loved.
Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.
Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

In my book, the label hero is grossly overused in today's society, and the requirements are not only too low, they're flat out wrong. No actor, rock star, or baseball player is a hero. Being good at what you do does not make you a hero; doing good deeds doesn't make you a hero; making the sacrifices made by these law enforcement professionals (and their families) makes them REAL HEROES. Although I don't live in California, thank you to Officer Steiner and his loved ones for their sacrifice, and his service.

To the Steiner family and friends-
It is with a heavy heart that I offer my deepest sympathy
for your loss. What a sensless act of cowardice. I know the
grief, pain and frustration you must feel-I lost an officer I
loved a year ago. It changes your life but in time you will be a better person for the time spent with him.
I wish you love, strength and peace.
