To the family of Officer Abella, I know all too well your pain. My husband was also killed in the line of duty while responding to a convenience store robbery and he too, struck a utility pole where he passed away instantly on Feb 5, 2004. We were only married 5 months.

It always brings me to tears when another officer loses his life. I can honestly say my heart aches for your family. I know you dont want to hear (and neither did I) anyone say "He's in a better place" because as surviving family, we think that the "better place" is here on this earth with US.

Officer Abella has made the ultimate sacrifice and has left this world a true hero. You have to believe that he is your new guardian angel. God only takes the best and he will take special care of him. Officer Abella and his family will be kept in my thoughts and in my heart.

Always keep this special man alive in your heart, through your love, and through your memories. And please remember, you WILL be together again someday.

I check this site daily hoping there is not an addition. I was deeply saddened when I heard the news this morning. David was well liked throughout the Sheriff's Office even though he was only with us for a short time. Thank you David for sharing your time with us, you will be missed. Unfortunately I didn't know Deputy Abella personnally, but my heart sank when I awoke this morning to the news at the loss of one of our own in Hillsborough County. I thought all day of the close calls that I have had responding to incidents in the middle of the night and making it home at the end of the shift. It was only by the grace of God that keep me safe. It's been 16 yrs. since we have lost a deputy in the line of duty and I thank God it's been that long. I hope that we never lose another, but if that time comes may it be another looooong 16 yrs. To Deputy Abella's family your loss is our agency's loss and we feel your pain. Be proud of David's work with the agency, I have heard nothing but great things him and his ability for catching the bad guys. My sympathy to all of you. We will never forget him.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003). Unfortunately, I had to add the name of another friend. Deputy Jeffrey Hewitt, Buncombe County (NC) Sheriff’s Department, E.O.W. April 4, 2004.

I am saddened to see the name of another young deputy added to this list today.

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.
