We never know when tragedy will strike, however rare its occurances may seem to us when it's someone far away. When it hits us right at home, we are shaken into the reality that somewhere, it has happened before, and somewhere it will happen again.

Let us always remember the dangers inherent in law enforcement, and learn whatever lessons we may to prevent such horrible consequences in the future.

If I could describe the characteristis and values which are needed to be the Professional Officer which we all seek to be, it would all revolve around Jeff. I am proud to have served with him and more importantly, the friendship we share. He has erned the respect of everyone he touched. He will be missed but the lessons learned through his actions and personality will be used as a means to reach the next level. He truely served with Integrity, Knowledge and Courage.

Another loss of one of our men in blue, when will it end?? Having just attended the funeral service for Deputy Van Kuren, Bradford County PA, it shocked me to see the killing of Police Officers continues.
Rest easy brother, you've done your time in hell. Now you sit in heaven next to God. Watch over your family and fellow officers left behind and all officers who continue the fight against evil in your name.

I NEVER DREAMED IT WOULD BE ME,
MY NAME FOR ALL ETERNITY.
RECORDED HERE AT THIS HALLOWED PLACE,
ALAS, MY NAME, NO MORE MY FACE.
"IN THE LINE OF DUTY" I HEAR THEM SAY.
MY FAMILY NOW THE PRICE TO PAY.
MY FOLDED FLAG STAINED WITH THEIR TEARS,
WE ONLY HAD THOSE FEW SHORT YEARS.
THE BADGE NO LONGER ON MY CHEST,
I SLEEP NOW IN ETERNAL REST.
MY SWORD I PASS TO THOSE BEHIND,
AND PRAY THEY KEEP THIS THOUGHT IN MIND.
I NEVER DREAMED IT WOULD BE ME,
AND WITH A HEAVY HEART AND BENDED KNEE,
I ASK FOR ALL HERE FROM THE PAST...

DEAR GOD LET MY NAME BE THE LAST.

Rest in Peace Sgt. Hewitt my thoughts and prayers are sent to your wife, friends, unborn child and co-workers during this tragic event.

A PART OF AMERICA DIED

SOMEBODY KILLED A POLICEMAN TODAY,
AND A PART OF AMERICA DIED.
A PIECE OF OUR COUNTRY HE SWORE TO PROTECT WILL BE BURIED
WITH HIM AT HIS SIDE.
THE SUSPECT WHO KILLED HIM WILL STAND UP IN COURT, WITH HIS
COUNSEL DEMANDING HIS RIGHTS, WHILE A WIDOWED MOTHER MUST
WORK FOR HER KIDS AND SPEND ALONE MANY LONG NIGHTS.
THE BEAT THAT HE WORKED WAS A BATTLEFIELD, TOO.
JUST AS IF HE’ED GONE OFF TO WAR. THOUGH THE FLAG OF OUR
NATION WON’T FLY AT HALF MAST, TO HIS NAME THEY WILL ADD A GOLD
STAR. YES, SOMEBODY KILLED A POLICEMAN TODAY, IT HAPPENED IN
YOUR TOWN OR MINE. WHILE WE SLEPT IN A COMFORT BEHIND OUR
LOCKED DOORS.
A COP PUT HIS LIFE ON THE LINE. NOW HIS GHOST WALKS THE BEAT ON
A DARK CITY STREET, AND HE STAND AT EACH NEW ROOKIE’S SIDE, HE
ANSWERED THE CALL AND GAVE US HIS ALL, AND A PART OF AMERICA
DIED.

POEM FOR ALL LEO’S KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY!

I am a former Buncombe County Deputy, a former Marine and a former resident of Asheville. I am an officer in Western NC and presently the First Sergeant of the National Guard MP unit in Asheville. This is so sickening. We in nearby Avery County lost a truly great officer under identical circumstances just over a year ago.

A number of my National Guard MP colleagues are Buncombe County officers, so it hurts us all. This senseless act of violence can not be explained and it is so heartbreaking, the loss of a fine veteran officer, a family man and a man who proudly served his nation in the USMC. Western NC law enforcement took a terrible loss early this morning.

The men and women of the Buncombe Co. S.O. are in my prayers, but most especially, the family, friends and close colleagues of Sgt. Hewitt. We all share in the pain and loss.

He now patrols the streets of Heaven with St. Michael. It is fortunate that the perpretrator did not kill anyone else before he took his own life. Had this brave officer not made the ultimate sacrifice, who knows what may have happened or what other lives may have been lost. As we think of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ in the approaching Easter Season, this tragedy reminds us of how so many good brother and sister officers followed the Savior's word from
John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

God bless and be safe. Rest easy brother, we have the watch from here.

There are but two persons who protect the sinful human race from destroying itself. One is God's Holy Spirit. The other is the Peace Officer. Without them, we would all perish at each other's hands.

You were called into this profession and our Lord and Savior has blessed you because:
According to Romans 13.1-5...
God ordains the Peace Officer’s profession.
The Peace Officer is sent by God.
The Peace Officer is vested with God's authority to enforce the law.
A Peace Officer's badge is to be honored by us, because it is honored by God.

You gave the ultimate sacrifice, your life for your fellow man, while serving, defending, and protecting others in your community.

To the family of Sergeant Jeffrey T. Hewitt and the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office, your extended family of Law Enforcement Officers grieves with you during this time. I pray that God will wrap his loving arms around each of you and comfort you during this most difficult time.

To all my brothers and sisters, please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Please pray for this officer's family and friends as they struggle with this tragedy.
May God be with you every day, please remember, we are a part of the largest family in the world and when one hurts we all hurt.

Though our badges and uniforms may be different, our mission is the same. Rest easy with our other fallen Brothers and Sisters, we have the watch now. We will continue the fight in your honor.
