I remember hearing the BOLO given out while on patrol at approximately 0015 hrs on Monday morning - "BOLO reference Officer Down....Buncombe County in 30 seconds". I remember the hollow feeling I suddenly felt inside and I knew everyone else working in Henderson County felt the same. We are all brothers in this business and we all feel the deep loss no matter who it may be. On behalf of the Laurel Park Police Department - Thank You!!!! for your service and god bless you, your family, and all the staff and personnel of the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office

This week another tragedy has struck on of our beloved officers and friend. I know the first question that anyone asks is WHY? Unfortunaly I dont know why but there is someone in Heaven who does. I remeber only a few short months ago having to endure the most excrutiating pain I ever have experienced. I never thought that I would have to go through something like this in my life time but I did. When my husband, Anthony, was killed. It is so ironic that one of our friends Jeff has now joined Anthony in Heaven. For several years Anthony had the opportunity to work on the same squad as Jeff at the Sheriffs Dept. before Anthony moved on to work for the Highway Patrol. During this time they became friends and I remeber my first date with Anthony we went to the MOvie with Jeff. I also remeber the times that he worked at Dillards while I was employed there as well. Anthony was going through Patrol school at the time and Jeff was always so considerate to check on me while Anthony was in Raleigh. Jeff was a great friend and I will always remember the times that Anthony and I got to share with him. I dont have answers but I do offer my comfort to his family and fellow officers. As bad as the pain is and probably will always be if you can lean on God for your strength then I can assure you he will bring you all through this painful time. I can say I have been there and have survived the daily journey only by the grace of God because at times it is harder than anyone could ever imagine. The hardest part for me is trying to keep Anthony's memory alive in our child, Cody. But I can assure you he will always know that his daddy died serving others and what an awesome example he was and how much he was loved. Tracy, I know that for you this time is so overwhelming and I want you to know that my prayers will be with you daily and you will be able to be strong. Always look to the Lord for your strength and he will bring you through it. To the fellow officers, remember that God doesnt promise us another day on this earth so please make sure you are prepared if you were to go. Thank you for the jobs you do and the sacrifices you make everyday. To Jeff, Please give Anthony a big hug from me and Cody. And know that you will be missed more than you could ever imagine. I will be there this week to stand in for my husband at this very sad time because I know where Anthony would be if he were still here on this Earth. He loved the Buncombe County Sheriffs and the former squad member that he worked so closely with. I want to offer comfort to the family. My prayers are with you all daily.
"Fear not for I have redeemed you I have called you out. Even when you pass through the waters I will be with you."Is. 43.1-2
He will carry you in the times that you feel you cant go on if you will lean on Him.
In His Hands,
Heidi Holloway Cogdill

A good training officer, supervisor, and leader are words that come to mind. Then joking, cutting up, sarcastically funny, and watch your step or he'll get the best of you follows soon after as I smile thinking of him. Most of the time he could get you even when you did watch out. I often wanted to go to work just to see what he was gonna get into next. I had a hard time getting into my uniform yesterday and checking on knowing he had been taken away. As I left the office, where so many others were attempting to cover their sadness, I began to cry. I hope everyone else remembers him as I do. I will smile often remembering him and the officer that he was. I will remember the things he taught me and never forget that he was,,,, a good man.

I beleive the Lord needed another good officer for a special duty,,,,, he has one!

"E2 Buncombe .. 10-8 Z-Zebra"
God has called home his lamb .. and for his wife, family, friends and co-workers who grieve, please allow that to give you some comfort. We stand together and share our tears, sorrow and pain. Through prayer and support from one another, we shall all see this through. Though, we will never forget Jeff, and will forever love and cherish his memory, we must move forward ... as hard as that is to do. Words cannot describe how thankful we all are for all of the thoughts and prayers .. not just from surrounding departments .. but from the nation. May God bless all who lose loved ones and fellow officers in this manner.

My thoughts and prayers are with your wife and family. Being the wife of a Sgt at Greenville County SO, I would never want to get that knock at the door, but it's always in the back of our minds. May God give her the peace and understanding in time as to why this has happened. And to all of you in blue, I love each and everyone of you. Let us never forget to tell our loved ones when as they leave for work that we love them, we never know when it will be our last time to see them.

Though I never knew Sergeant Hewitt on a personal level, I had met him several times in passing while working with Edward Squad at the Sheriff's Office. Jeff was a man who would always offer a kind smile even to a perfect stranger, A man who loved his job and the community and country he served.
In a progressingly anti-law enforcement society, the death of an officer always serves as a painful reminder of how dangerous and grossly underappreciated our jobs really are.
Sergeant Hewitt died trying to protect the citizens of Buncombe County from a dangerous man.
To Jeffs wife and Child, God Bless you in your time of tremendous need. Be proud of him, he is truly a hero.
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies but one.
Rest in Peace Edward-2. We Miss You
