I knew Mike for at least 10 years or more when he worked for the Northeast Police Dept. I remember him stopping at the firehouse in one of the boroughs he patrolled during a parade and wished me luck when he heard that I enrolled into the Police Academy. After I became a sworn officer, I was put on the street with very little experience and a small amount of training under my belt. I can still hear him giving me sound advice and letting me know that if I ever needed anything not to be afraid to come see him. That was over 3 years ago. I learned alot since then, but if it wasn't for a part of Mike in my life and carrer as a Police Oficer, I would not be the officer I am today. I will never forget and you will always be in my memories for that they can never take that away from me. You will be forever missed.
Never say goodbye but to say we shall meet again.

To the Van Kuren Family,

I first met Mike in 1996. I was shot in a hunting accident on Mercker Hill in Standing Stone Twp. just outside of Wysox. Mike was a great help to me and my family during a trying time. I'm glad I thanked him for his understanding and caring through out the investigation. It was as if we worked together on the same department. I'm sorry for your loss and pray you are all doing well. We lost a fellow brother last year (Arthur Ohlsen III). I just happened to look through the line of duty 2004 and I saw Mike. Words can not explain how I feel about Mike. My family was blessed to know him in that short period of time. God Bless you all.

To David's family, I can only hope you have found the love and support that my family has experienced this past yr from not only people you know but from those who share your pain. I had no idea the number of lives touched by such an event, both near and far, nor the breadth of the "family" we now consider our own. Know that you have our thoughts and prayers with you now and forever, for you, as with David, will always be remembered.

That day was the worst day in my almost 11 years at Bradford County 911. It still doesn't seem possible. Every time validations come in or a warrant to get put in the system, my heart just aches. I miss calling the Sheriff Department to ask him about something on a warrant and hearing "What do you want?" and me saying "To bug the living **** out of you!". There will always be that empty spot and while they say it does get easier with time, I find it hard to believe. You'll always be in our hearts Mike!

Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Thank you Deputy Van Kuren for a job well done. Please continue to watch over us and protect us as only you can. You will forever be at our side and in our hearts.

For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.

There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Michael did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Michael be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Deputy Van Kuren's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Michael is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Michael was well respected and well loved.

Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

TO: The family;loved ones;friends and department members; A POLICE OFFICER'S PRAYER: O, gentle Lord! Keep the day / night watch with me.As I begin my tour of duty, I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work ,endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent on me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think no one really cares and that I am taken for granted. Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence.Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord,I ask that I may return safely ,after my tour of duty,to my loved ones and those who love me.I pray that I may be a good and honroable police officer;and that after my tour of duty is over here on earth, may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those that serve you well. AMEN *** REST IN PEACE*** Sent to you by the father of Officer First Class J.D.Koeppen,Capital City Raleigh NC and Trooper D.C.Koeppen NJ State Police

Micheal, I was born in Bradford County PA and lived their in the beginning of my life before my family moved. I still have family there. I found out today that you and I where related distantly. I made attempts to travel for your funeral however as you knew police work is demanding and time off is not always possible. I regret that we never met, and never had the opportunity to talk shop. But I will continue to keep your memory alive, and continue the fight. "Rest In Peace Brother.....We have the watch now" "Blessed are the peace keepers, for they shall be the children of God"

REST EASY SIR FOR YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!!!!

A PART OF AMERICA DIED

SOMEBODY KILLED A POLICEMAN TODAY,
AND A PART OF AMERICA DIED.
A PIECE OF OUR COUNTRY HE SWORE TO PROTECT WILL BE BURIED
WITH HIM AT HIS SIDE.
THE SUSPECT WHO KILLED HIM WILL STAND UP IN COURT, WITH HIS
COUNSEL DEMANDING HIS RIGHTS, WHILE A WIDOWED MOTHER MUST
WORK FOR HER KIDS AND SPEND ALONE MANY LONG NIGHTS.
THE BEAT THAT HE WORKED WAS A BATTLEFIELD, TOO.
JUST AS IF HE’ED GONE OFF TO WAR. THOUGH THE FLAG OF OUR
NATION WON’T FLY AT HALF MAST, TO HIS NAME THEY WILL ADD A GOLD
STAR. YES, SOMEBODY KILLED A POLICEMAN TODAY, IT HAPPENED IN
YOUR TOWN OR MINE. WHILE WE SLEPT IN A COMFORT BEHIND OUR
LOCKED DOORS.
A COP PUT HIS LIFE ON THE LINE. NOW HIS GHOST WALKS THE BEAT ON
A DARK CITY STREET, AND HE STAND AT EACH NEW ROOKIE’S SIDE, HE
ANSWERED THE CALL AND GAVE US HIS ALL, AND A PART OF AMERICA
DIED.

POEM FOR ALL LEO’S KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY!

I am saddened to learn of more law enforcement deaths. I hate knowing we live in such a cruel world. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Deputy Van Kuren.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

...Gone, but never Forgotten....
