Reflections for Police Officer Matthew Edmond Bowens

I have had the honor to work on a regular basis with Matt and the honor to work with Jenn a couple of times. I am very saddened by the loss of these Officers I called friends. The loss of Matt and Jenn pulled our precinct closer, opened our eyes to the love of our comrades. I love you Matt and Jenn and look forward to the day we can embrace and share stories.

My heart truly aches for Matthew's wife and child. I too have lost my husband in the line of duty after just 5 months of marriage.
Matthew has made the ultimate sacrifice and another hero has left this earth. Mrs. Bowens, always keep Matthew alive in your heart and through your love. Your memories will help keep you and he close until you can be together again. You and your family will be in my thoughts and in my heart.

My heart breakes when I read this time and time again. I am from the old school and don't think I could have made that arrest. God bless the officer that did. I was taught you don't bring garbage inside, you take the garbage out. May God bless all the officers in their Department who suffered such a loss as well as their familys

I feel this poem could be of comfort to all and am sure Jennifer and Matthew both agree............

Dont think of them as gone away
Their journeys just begun
This life holds so many faucets
Earth is only one

Think of them Resting in a place
Where there are no sorrows and there are no tears
Think of them as resting in a place where there are no days and there are no years

Think how they could be wishing
That we would all know today
Nothing loved is ever gone
And they were loved so much

THANK YOU MATTHEW AND JENNIFER

As we try to make sense of what happened, we must see what is very
clear. Two fine officers are immortalized, they will sit at the hand of God,
where they begin there new shift. God Bless.

I am truly saddened by yet another tragic loss in our police family. The US/Canada border does not separate the sense of loss I feel when a life is lost in the line of duty. Years ago I received a poem from a family member visiting in the U.S. after the loss of one my fellow officers. It is as follows:

Somebody killed a policeman today and
a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
and spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name, they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today.
It happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call and gave us his all,
And a part of America died.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Bowen's family, friends, and department. Unfortunately this pain is felt by too many, as this site continues to grow. We are the family of a police officer killed in the line of duty, by senseless gunfire, just as these two fine young officers. The love and support we felt during that horrible time and continue to feel from our family in Blue, will never be forgotten.

A blue light is in our window and shines every day and night, there are blue ribbons on our cars, not just in May but throughout the year. We thank a police officer every time we see one and thank God for the time we had with our son, although too short.

Asking why, doesn't help, trust us... Just hold dear to the thought that God needed another angel to watch out for us all and he selected one of the best we had.

God Bless!

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, February 20, 2004 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Police Officers Matthew Bowens and Jennifer Fettig who died in the line of duty just four days ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Bowens and Fettig's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Matthew and Family,
My heart goes out to all of you. Matthew will never be forgotten. I will be thinking of you and your family each day. It is a terrible feeling to think of how many officers have been killed in just the past 7 months since my husband was also killed in the line of duty. They are all truly heros who selflessly put their lives in danger to protect us buy doing what they loved to do. I know they will continue to protect us from above. Matthew, watch over your DPD brothers and sisters, many who are friends of mine and Kevin's too, and keep them safe.

Why???? I will never be able to fathom why god takes the good ones in the ways he does. Officer Bowens death has inspired me to aim high... reach for the stars... I want to be a police officer and take people like the killer off the street. In his memory I will exceed my ambitions just like this young man did. I am so very proud to say I live in a community he protected...... He was a god send!!!!!! May god see the Bowens and Fettig famalies through the hell they are living in.
