Reflections for Police Officer Matthew Edmond Bowens
15 months...it seems like only yesterday. Remembering you and Jen bringing prisoners in to Detroit Receiving, and you wanted to be out on patrol doing your job and not in the ED. Talking with you and Jen @ the Auto Show on detail while I was on duty with Hart Medical, about the crowd of people and the cool cars. Only Yesterday seems like a far away memory, shrouded in the phone call to "watch channel so and so, someone was shot in the 4th..." The cold day of your funeral and the feeling of loss eternal, but not really so. I'll see you again Bro, you and Jen can meet my family as you stroll heaven's gold paved streets, bored but in peace. When I arrive @ the gate, we'll catch up on things, and you 2 can show me around. But until then, I'll be doing the job, saving lives and helping others, always mindful of the sacrifice you paid on that street. Never far from my memories, and never forgotton.

HAPPY EASTER MATT
March 27, 2005
Hey Matt,
We are having a fundraiser for P.O. Hayes on March 31, and I started thinking about loved ones that have come and gone on this department...
Most of my memories of you are from teaching you at the academy. Man, you looked so young, and full of life...always eager to give it your best, your sense of humor...it still amazes me that people as young as you, risk their lives everyday for this city...true hero's...
I wish we could have shared more memories together, Matt...It wasn't fair that you and Jen left us so soon...
Well, I will be thinking of you and Jen this coming fundraiser...please bless all of the hero's that still go out, day after day, and risk their butts...thanks, Matt...

Your service is appreciated officer Bowen. Words mean so little when an officer makes the ultimate sacrifice as you did.
You were loved by many I can see, as I read the messages here.
Today I will pray a special prayer for your family as they continue to miss you.

their is never a day that i don't cry for you. Their is never a moment i don't miss you. their are so many questions i ask myself over and over again, and so many things i wish i could take back and change. So many nights i cry myself to sleep because she asks where you are or talks about you, and i don't know how to respond. She misses you. It has been extremly hard without you matt, all i had to do was give you my hand and you always made everything better. i would give everthing i have to bring you back. we miss you. Take care of mom. with all of our love forever and a day.

While doing geaneological research, I was made aware of this site by a helpful librarian at the main branch Detroit library. I was looking up info on a relative (P.O. Norman Towler) who was shot and killed Oct. 16, 1917 at the corner of Porter and Vinewood streets in currently #3. I was looking at the list of all Detroits fallen officers and was thinking, it sure was dangerous to be a cop in the 20s,30s,and early to mid 70s. Then I remembered officers Bowens and Fettig and realized it's always dangerous and no matter what the era, all our officers deserve our respect and gratitude. God Bless. The blue light is in the window.

It's been over a year already Matt but not a day goes by that I don't think of you and Jen. You know the pain hasn't gotten any easier but I doubt it ever will. Our family just isn't the same without ya!
Give mom a hug from me and tell her we're doing the best we can without you two. Until we meet again little brother....

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.
Tonight, February 16, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Police Officer Jennifer Timathy-Ann Fettig and Police Officer Matthew Bowens who died in the line of duty on this date one year ago.
When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.
Officer Fettig's and Officer Bowens' Herring’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.

As you complete your first year in Heaven, we pray that you are resting in peace. You are truly a warrior who was worthy of recieving an eternal assignment in Paradise. Although your family feels pain from your departure, help them to find solace in knowing that you are now in a better place, looking after them. We will keep you and your family in our prayers.

I cant even begin to understand what the Bowens family will feel for the rest of their lives. I never met you Matt but I will never forget standing on the corner of Telegragh that cold rainy day, shivvering because i was so cold, shaking beacuse I was so angry and sobbing because I felt so sorrowfull for a family I never even met. What is happening to the world we live in? I may just be a stranger but I can honestly say that the story of Officer Matthew Bowens has touched my life.I dont know what to type to the Bowens, what do you say to a family that has encountered more grief in one year than most people ever will in a lifetime? Please know this,Matthew left footprints in peoples lives he never even met, for years to come he will be remembered by so many people. Rest in Peace Matthew, God please hold the remaining Bowens family close to you.
