Family history and the account of my great-uncle W. E. Hammon's death led to the Gunnison library, courthouse and Pitkin Cemetery. I have letters from Uncle Emory written to his brother, Samuel Patton Hammons, documenting his life in Colorado. His name was actually Wilson Emory Hammon(s). My family's visits to Gunnison County always lead us to the grave of Uncle Emory in the Pitkin cemetery, where we are always reminded of the pioneer spirit that led to the settling of the Colorado frontier, and the sacrifices of our ancestors. Uncle Emory, rest in peace.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 108th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace

The paths of lives lead us both to serve as a Deputy Sheriff with Gunnison County a century apart. You will always be remembered not only as my great uncle but as a fellow officer who gave the ultimate sacrifice for another.

Deputy Hammon - Last Friday, on a very rainy morning, I stood in the State Assembly chamber when your name was one of almost 250 others read off during a motion regarding next month's Police Memorial Week. You are not forgotten. Next May 15th we shall wear our mourning bands in memory of you all. Thank you for your service to the people of Gunnison County and the state of Colorado. May God grant you eternal rest and may His perpetual light shine upon you.
