Reflections for Police Officer Nicholas Kevin Sloan
Nick,
I can’t believe its already been four weeks, just a few days before you were taken from us we were at the gym talking about playing hockey in the upcoming Police Olympics and now your gone. It’s just not right, I was really looking forward to the day when your son and mine were a little older and we could bring them out to the rink and teach them how to play like some of the guys do now. It seems like just yesterday I was talking to your dad at the station gas pumps, you were in the academy at the time and your dad was telling me how good of a player you were, and he was right. All the guys on team miss you, especially me, since you helped cover up most of the mistakes I was making on the back line.
Before I go I just wanted to say thank you for being my friend for the few years I new you. You’re a class act and an inspiration to us all. Rest in peace knowing we will never forget you.

Partner, Sorry it took me so long to contact you. I have been trying to do this for some time. Today is 03-06-04, I saw your Dad( A Champ), Steve, Brad, Gabe and several others today at a fundraiser for your son and girlfriend. Since the day you passed I along with McMurry, Stone and others have been asking ourselves just one question, WHY YOU?. We all worked together the night before this until midnight, and we did this dope work day-in-and-day-out. You and I spoke several times about being able to follow in the footsteps our DAD'S. I remember us talking, and saying if we could be only half the officer's our father's were, we were in good shape.
I saw your dad today and wanted to say something about our conversations (DAD and SON) but I couldn't. Your Dad came to me while I was holding my son and said "we should get Gavin and Sammy toghther some time". Nick, we were alike in many ways reguarding our fathers, like Terry giving you his original badge number, same with my dad. My daughter 5yrs met your Dad and Gabe today, she don't undrstand everything that is going on, however; and the last thing she asked me when we left the BBQ was if she could be a hero like NICK and GABE. MAN, I miss you, I still have you in my NEXTEL, thinking I'll call Nick for the clue I'm missing in the 8th Dist.
I along with the Secrete Squirreles and our families pray for you and your family, and along with Gabe's family.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Officer Nick Sloan, as well as his brothers and sisters with the St. Louis Police Department. Nick, you are a true hero who made the ultimate sacrifice for what you believe in. Words cannot express the sorrow that is felt when a fellow brother falls. You will be missed. Rest easy brother.

Rest in peace, officer. Without warriors like you, St. Louis would have collapsed long ago.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Sloan's family, girlfriend, friends and department. Unfortunately this pain is felt by too many, as this site continues to grow. We too are the family of a police officer killed in the line of duty, by senseless gunfire, just as this fine young officer was. The love and support we felt during that tragic time and continue to feel from our family in Blue, will never be forgotten.
A blue light is in our window and shines every day and night. There are blue ribbons on our cars, not just in May but throughout the year. Everytime a police car goes by with their lights on or a stop is being made, we say a prayer. We thank a police officer every time we see one and daily thank God for the time we had with our son, although too short.
Hold dear to the thought that God needed another angel to watch out for us all and he selected one of the best we had.
God Bless!

Our Greatest Fear
Yet once again the Thin Blue Line is diminished,
an officer’s final tour of duty is finished.
"Officer down", it’s our greatest fear,
and once again, I hold back a tear.
They patrol in the state, city, county and town,
in uniforms colored white, green, blue and brown.
The shape of their badges may vary,
but it’s a symbol that they all, proudly carry.
They leave for work with a kiss goodbye,
but some don’t come home, no matter how hard they try.
To uphold the law is the job that they pick,
with such high aspirations, why must some die so quick?
They leave behind loved ones, family and friends,
after their lives have met tragic ends.
Some die in crashes, others hearts not too stout,
to many have been lost when gunshots ring out.
Our Heavenly Father has called them home,
no more these dark streets do they roam.
Through trial and error they have given their best,
please Lord, now grant them eternal rest.
Yet once again the Thin Blue Line is diminished,
an officer’s final tour of duty is finished.
" Officer down", it’s our greatest fear,
and once again I hold back a tear.
Rest easy brother the watch is ours now. Our Prayers are with your family, friends and loved ones.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Nick did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Nick be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Sloan's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his girlfriend. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.
Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Nick is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Nick was well respected and well loved.
Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.
Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

It has been two weeks since you gave your life for the citizens of Saint Louis. I love you very much and miss you dearly. I can not describe the pain and hurt that I feel everyday. Hi I work at the St. Charles County Sheriff dept. in St. Charles MO and I just wanted to express my deepest condolenses on behalf of my dept. Some of us watched the funeral on t.v. while others actually went to the service to honor our fallen brother. We are all supporting you through this time of sorrow and will be there for you if you need anything. As a law enforcement family we will keep his name and memory alive so that his son may grow up knowing how well thought of his father was and how courageous he was for the job he did. Everyday we go out and we fight the war against drugs and when something tragic like this happens it just makes us more determined than ever to win this war, not only for our children but also for all of our brothers and sisters who have given their lives for this cause. We want them to know they did not die in vain that we will win this one for them. God bless all of the co-workers and family of this fallen officer may you feel at peace someday knowing he will always be there on every call you take watching your back. May he and every other fallen officer be with us in our hearts and memories everyday as we all continue to walk that thin blue line. With deepest sympathies, a friend from the St. Charles County Sheriffs Department.

Nick,
What can I say brother ? I never had the oppournity to really know you. I have seen you in Div 25 numerous times and know that you were a hell of a cop. I stood outside of the Cathedral Baslica the other day feeling sorry for you Nick but then something said, Don't feel sorry for Nick, feel sorry for his son and family. I know you died doing what you loved nick and I know if you had to do it over again you would. Keep an eye out for the rest of us and take pride in knowing you did your best you are a hero and I will never forget you!

While I did not know Office Sloan, I was protected by him since I live and work in St. Louis. I also have a friend who works for the City of St. Louis Police Department. I'm sure all those who work on the police force realize the hazzards they face every day. In all honesty I don't think about it, but I should. And I should be thankful for all those who risk their lives on a daily basis to make my world a safer and better place to live. There is no way to make up for the loss of Officer Sloan's life. But thank you for living these few short years as a St. Louis hero!
