Life Ain't Always Beautiful
By Gary Allan

Life ain't always beautiful
Sometimes it's just plain hard
Life can knock you down, it can break your heart

Life ain't always beautiful
You think you're on your way
And it's just a dead end road at the end of the day

But the struggle makes you stronger
And the changes make you wise
And happiness has it's own way of takin' its sweet time

No, life aint always beautiful
Tears will fall sometimes
Life aint always beautiful
But it's a beautiful ride

Life aint always beautiful
Some days I miss your smile
I get tired of walkin' all these lonely miles

And I wish for just one minute
I could see your pretty face
Guess I can dream, but life dont work that way

But the struggles make me stronger
And the changes make me wise
And happiness has it's own way of takin' its sweet time

No life aint always beautiful
But I know I'll be fine
Hey life aint always beautiful
But its a beautiful ride
What a beautiful ride

Nick,

I love you and miss you so much.

Until we meet again......

Love you,
Heather

Nick-
We just got back from Bill McEntee's mass. His family is so strong. I think his family is alot like ours. I am so glad that we met them, I just wish that you and Bill could have been here with us.

Everybody keeps telling me that Payton is such a happy baby. I know that you picked her out especially for us. She has expressions that you have. I know that you were at the lake this weekend. I gave Heather her birthday present from us. Don't worry, I got you covered like usual. What are sisters for? I'm sure that you had something to do with her cake. I wanted to try to make everything perfect for her birthday but I know that her true wish will never come true. It is what all of us are wishing for.

We really need you right now. It is so hard with Father's day, your birthday, Heather's birthday, 4th of July and Dad's birthday. The holiday's just aren't the same.

I don't know what we would do without Gavin, Bobby and Payton. They are what is getting all of us through these days without you.

I wish that I could tell all of the other families that things will get better but I would be lying.

Sorry if I sound down but I am just having a rough day today. I just don't understand how God can take you and all of the other brave Policeman.

Well, I love you and you are the best brother and uncle anybody could ever have.

Happy birthday, Nick! Sorry I couldn't write you yesterday, I just got the Internet hooked up today. I hope you and Joe had your own party in heaven to celebrate your birthday. I miss you guys! I went to the cemetary last Friday and I was planning on going yesterday, but I had a big problem the other night and couldn't get up there. You're probably wondering why I didn't do anything, but everything will hopefully come out the right way. I'm planning on going to the cemetary tomorrow, so I will bring some flowers and a balloon for you. Take care for now and I will talk to you later. Happy Birthday!

Hey Nick,
I keep wanting to add this note that Grandpa wrote to you. At one time he said he was going to write something but he never gave it to Teresa or myself to type and then I came across it while we were going through his things so here goes.
"Grandpa is a man of few words so this won't be long but it is by all means not all that I remember about you - there is not enough paper or space for that - so just 2 or 3 things. You were always there for me - be it to cut grass, trim weeds, rearrange or level the white rock down at the lake, dig holes to plant the thorn bushes at the house on coventry or other back breaking work. Hard work never stopped you whether it be labor, sports player or whatever you felt had to be done. You were to young to drive a car but you sure tore up the roads at Peaceful Valley Lake on my riding lawn mower. I'm sure you saw all of the people that lined up to see you on your life mission because what you have done is not done. That Crown Vic along with Officer Nick "Stalone" Sloan will be seen in the back of the minds of people in your district and keep drugs and other crimes on the run.
When Joan told me you were shot I asked God, who just took Sue, to take me instead and let me join Grandma and you stay here if it was his will but I guess he wants me to see all of the good things your sacrifice is going to do for your district, the City of St. Louis and who knows.

Hey Nick!
Happy Birthday! I was down in Soulard last night. There was uniform cops hanging around the door outside the bar we were going in. Just for a minute I pictured you there with them.( Maybe you did stop by!) Anyway I just want to say that were all thinking of you. I talk about you with the girls. I said today is Uncle Nick's birthday up in heaven. McKenna said "Gavin's daddy?" I nodded yes, then she was quiet and said real sweet "I don't want my daddy to be in heaven"
It was so innocent. I said you a very lucky little girls to have your daddy be here. But Gavin's daddy can watch over him and be with him all the time in his heart. They both seemed liked they were really listening- I was ready for some deep coversation. Then they asked me to get the playdough out! So I think I lost them! Say a prayer for me! We love you and miss you!
Happy 27th! Love, Mike,Michelle,Skylar, and Mckenna

Happy birthday Nick! Hope you are celebrating in your own way up there...between you and Joe, I am sure you are having a good time. I saw Gavin the other day...it is amazing how much of you he has in him. I couldn't help but smile when I was with him...which was always the effect you had on me as well! Well, just wanted to let you know that we were thinking of you! In a few weeks, we will have our own little man to look after! Gavin will have to show him the way of the world! Miss you and wish you were here.

Happy Birthday Little Brother!
I'm a few days early, but I wont have internet this weekend. I hope you have a great day on Sunday. I'm sure you will have a great big party. As always, I'll make rice krispy treats and we will have a little party for you.

The other day, I was thinking about when we used to go to Six Flags just to ride front row on Batman. Then we would leave and go to the lake. Those were great times, we could just have fun all the time. Of course that is what childhood is for. We can thank mom and dad for being the best parents ever. They raised all of us very well, gave us everything they could. All three of us turned out great and we all had great children. The grandchildren are there reward for being such great parents.

A couple of weeks ago Josh and dad got the waverunner ready for summer. Josh and I took it out. It was fun, but it took me a while to agree to go on it. It is so hard because we got the waverunner together and always had so much fun with it. I know you would be out on it every chance you had. So I figured I should go have fun for Nick.

I'd better get going, have a great birthday. I love you and miss you so much.

Until we meet again,
Heather

Nick-
Happy Belated Father's Day! I know you were watching Gavin and heard our talk that he had with me while I was feeding Payton "before it was even light outside". He misses you so much. When he was asking me all of the questions about you, I just thought about what you would say to him and said that. I hope you got all of kisses and I Love You's that we sent your way. I tried real hard not to cry when Gavin asked me those questions but when he asked me why you couldn't just leave heaven for a few minutes to come and see us I couldn't hold back the tears. I only let a few come out which natually Gavin saw and asked me why I was crying, I said because I miss your Daddy and he gave me one of those big hugs and said me too Kel. Then it made me smile. He acts just like you so much more everyday.

Thanks for all of the talks that you have with Payton each morning when she wakes up. She is in her baby bed just laughing and "talking". James & I are so blessed to have such a happy and easy going baby. I think you must have had something to do with that.

Happy Early Birthday!!! I have to take Payton to the Dr. today and she has to get 4 shots which I think maybe harder on me then her. However, Gee-ma and Papa are going so that might make it a little bit easier.

Thanks for visiting me last night! It felt so real like you were really with us again. You also answered alot of questions that I had. Thanks so much for everything that you continue to do for us. Tell Scott Congratulations on being an uncle. Baby Morgan is so cute and April did such a great job. Be with Bill and his family as his anniversary is coming up.

Well, I better go now. We are going to go and visit you today at the Cemetery and leave you surprises.

I love you so much,
Till I see you again,
Kel, James & Payton

I love this part from the Kenney Chesney song "The sky is so blue, I feel like I can talk to you..."

NICK,
Happy Father's Day! It makes me sad to think that Gavin only was able to spend one Father's Day with you and he won't ever remember it since he was only six months old. You are a wonderful Daddy. We were talking with Kirsten yesterday about how much he looks and acts like you. Gavin and Bobby were playing in the dirt with their cars and trucks. Gavin had the same look on his face that you had when you were in the middle of a childhood building project or making roads for your cars.
Grandpa Carpenter must have been so happy to finally be able to meet his Dad. I know how much he missed him even though Grandpa was only nine days old when his dad died.
Nick, I know you wish you were here with your Dad today. The hardest part of dying, I imagine, is to see the ones you loved hurting so much every day.
Please watch over us all and be with Gavin and your Dad today.
I love you forever and a day.

NICK:

Happy Father's Day!!! I hope that you will have a good time today. I know that you will be spending the day with Gavin. We spent the last two days with the beautiful young man. He is so funny. Gavin helped me shave Friday morning. He kept laughing and making funny faces at me. Gavin and Bobby are so good with Baby Payton. They are so proud and protective of her. Yesterday Gavin and Bobby were in the backyard at Kelly and James house digging holes and playing with their trucks and tractors. As we were watching them, you can really see how much Gavin looks and acts just like you did at his age. Of course after a while, the trucks and tractors were in the pool getting washed. They are like brothers wanting to do everything together.

During the month of May we attended the ceremonies in Jefferson City and then Mom and I went to Washington D.C for Police Week. It was a very emotional time for all of us. We all miss you very much.

Well your 27th birthday is just around the corner. Keep a close eye on all of us, we all need your help. Thanks for the song last night, Mom and I needed that....

Help out April if she needs anything in the next couple of weeks.

Talk to you later....

Love you forever....

Happy Father's Day Nick

Today is a hard day for all of us. We had Gavin the last couple of days, he is so much like you. He misses you so much, he said he would like you to come back from Heaven. (He told Kelly at there morning talk) We all try our best to fill your shoes, by doing all the things with him that you would be doing. Those are pretty hard shoes to fill. You are the best daddy and gave Gavin everything you could.
A couple of weeks ago Bobby and Gavin were in a Fishing Derby, it was so cute. The whole family went, the boys had there spiderman fishing poles and caught some good fish. They were so proud, when the derby was over they each got a medal. Gavins total weight of fish was 6.5 ounces and Bobbys was 5 ounces, or something close to that. It was the cutest thing ever.
About a month ago, I was holding Payton and I showed her a picture of you. I said this is Uncle Nick, and she grabbed the picture and kissed it. It was so cute, she smiled and talked to you too.
We all miss you so much. Everyday I wish I could somehow have you back here with us. I know we will all be together again someday.

I love you so much, Happy Father's Day to the best Daddy and Brother anyone could have.

I love you,
Heather

Nick, Just a hello. Everytime I check your page I am continously amazed by the reflections. Your family must really be proud, as they should be. It is evident that even with you gone you are still alive in so many hearts. In the same aspect you too should be proud. Your mother and father have helped so many others through their hard times after your death. It is hard to imagine a good side to all of this, but I must say that your parents have found a way to push aside their own hurt when others, in similar situations, are in a time of need. It does not get much more amazing than that. Someday I hope to tell them that in person. You take care of that family. I think of Gavin a lot, but have lost touched with him. He is always in my thoughts. I will get to see him one of these days. I'll give him a big hug from you too. Take care up there.

Hey Nick,
I had never been told about this page until recently. It is so nice to hear all the wonderful things about you and how you have seem to have left a special place in everyones heart. You are a great man and a wonderful friend. I know as the years went by we were not as close, but you were always close to my heart. I hope that your family is doing well, and I will pray for them. Nick,
I hope you are doing good. I can't tell you how much we miss you. It never gets any easier. Last night Bobby wrote you a letter, he was so cute he sat at the computer and said "I need to write to Uncle Nick". He misses you so much too.
Today is Mothers Day, it is so hard for mom. We surprised her with a little landscaping and sent cards with dad to D.C. When we called her this morning she sounded so sad. It made me start to cry. I hope she knows how much we all love her and miss her ( while they are in D.C.) Everyday Bobby ask if her and Paw Paw are coming home soon. He misses the both of them so much too. Please be with mom today, she really needs you. We all love you and miss you so much.

I love you,
Heather

Here is a poem for mom from you.
Since Kelly and I always helped you out by getting gift from all of us. What are sisters for. You had a very busy life. As you can see nothing has changed. We love you.

To Mom,

I'm Not Far Away
by Sharon Jean Bryant

Mom, please listen to me
As I take time to write.
I see parents struggling daily.
Their pain is such a fight.

All of us who have gone on
And left the rest of you behind.
We're ok, Mom, I promise.
Heaven is beautiful, and God is kind.

You used to tell me that one day
God would call and take you home.
You told me you'd make me strong
So I would stand tall when alone.

But things happen sometimes, Mom
That does not go in our plans.
I wasn't scared, Mom,
When God held out his hand.
I didn't want to leave you
I didn't have time to say good bye
When the angels said, "Come with us",
There wasn't time to question why.

I've watched you daily, Mom.
It hurts to see you cry.
I don't want you to be unhappy,
Just because we didn't get to say good bye.

Tell the others what I'm telling you,
So many parents need to know
That Earth was just a lay over
We had another place to go.

I know you miss me, Mom
I know your heart was broken in two,
But God really needed me
Because my earthly life was through.

I'm always alongside you..
I smile and touch your hair.
I whisper "Mom, I love you",
You just can't see me there.

I'm the one who gentle touches you
On your shoulder when you're sad.
I'm happy now that you finally found
God again, and are no longer mad.

Tell the parents, Mom, for me
That all of us kids are okay.
God had plans for our lives
When he called us home that day.

I love you, Mom, I always will
And remember I'm not far away.
We're going to be together
When God calls out your name.

Happy Mothers Day,
I love you Mom.
Love, Nick
