At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, December 16, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Border Patrol Agent James Paul Epling who died in the line of duty on this date two years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Agent Epling’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.

To the family of Agent Epling,
Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers on the eve of the second anniversary of Jimmy's passing. May his children always know that their daddy was a true hero, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.
May peace be with all of you during this difficult holiday season.

I still think about Jimmy all the time. We first met at Bruton High School and quickly became friends. We were friends all through high school, and even talked some through college. To this day I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news. I couldn't believe it. It messed with me for weeks. Even now, living in Washington DC, I see members of the Border Patrol every now and then on the metro, and can't help but think of Jimmy. He was such and funny, sweet, and caring person, and will be missed always. I continue to look at the pics we took together in high school, senior field day, prom, track, etc. I remember I always use to mess with Jimmy and tell him I was going to wait for his little brother Joe (who was really little at the time) to grow up so I could date him, Jimmy would get a kick out of that! ha! My heart and prayers go out to his family. John stay strong. To his wife and children, your husband and father was a great man, friend, and agent. He will always be in our hearts.

My deepest sympathies go out to Jimmy's family. All of his friends in Virginia were deeply saddened by the news. I was lucky to have the privilege to know someone like him and I am a better person because of it. We will never forget you Jimmy and you will always be in our hearts. Blue Couches and metros forever.

Its been a year, and the pain of losing my friend is still there. You had a talent I admired of you and that few have. That is you always found something good in all of us when others were blinded by the mistakes we made. You movtivated your friends, while others shot down thier efforts. Giving was not an option!

I was Just looking through the down officer listing and saw your name Jim. I think about You often for getting me into playing paint ball and the fun times we had in Ft. Sam Houston. I wondered how to get a hold of you, but never had much time to do it, now I can kick myself. I'll see you again and I pray for your family and friends. Remember the lyrics for Filter you said "we broke it down" you were the first person I talked to that first day in Texas and I thought this place isn't half bad. Thank you for making me feel like I fit in. Good bye Jimmy.

I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face

"In the line of duty" I hear them say
My family now the price will pay
My folded flag stained with their tears
We only had those few short years

The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind

I never dreamed it would be me
And with heavy heart and bended knee
I ask for all here from the past
Dear God, let my name be the last

In loving memory of Jimmy.....my classmate, my friend, my brother.

I just read about this tragic accident and I am sorry for the loss of such a young officer who's life was cut short. I believe that a short life that was full of meaning and work well done is worth more than many more years gone to waste. James was a blessing and his courage is something to look up to...be proud! I too know and understand this kind of loss. My love of my life was killed 12/19/02 while on duty, only 31. I'll never forget who he was and what he did everyday of his life. If they were any different we couldn't love them so much!
I'll keep James in my prayers along with all the others...and pray for all his loved ones who have to live on without him. STAY STRONG.

God Bless you James and Rest in Peace...

I just want to thank all of you for your kind words and the support you have given to my family. I know that Jimmy is glad to know that we are being taken care of so well. I hope that all of his brothers and sisters who are left behind think of all the fallen officers before you answer your next call. Be careful out there we appreciate and respect your service to us and our country but we love having you here with us at the end of every shift more.

Our brother in law was one of the most wonderful men in the whole world. He touched so many lives. He was a wonderful and loving father and husband. Not only was he our sons uncle, but he was his god father. We know that Ethan will forever have a guardian angel to look over him. We love and miss Jimmy everyday and we are greatful for having had the chance to have him in our lives. REST IN PEACE JIMMY.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Jimmy's family. I attended Army training with him back in 2000. I just recently found out about his death and have notified all of our old Army buddies. We all would like to send our sympathy out to his family. Jimmy was a great guy and a damn good soldier as well. Rest in Peace, Brother!
