Reflections for Corporal Thomas Roberts

I was working as a Jail Officer on the night of December 13, 2003 at the St. Joseph County Jail in South Bend, IN. I vividly remember hearing the horrifying call of an officer down over the radio. I am now in training to become a police officer, and tomorrow I will formally dedicate the day of training for my academy class to this fallen hero. My heart and prayers go out to the family of Corporal Roberts, as well as to the family of Patrolman Verkler, may our fallen heros rest in peace. Amen.

Tom, I have visited your memorial several times with my grandchildren. I hope you are as proud as I am. Deb is in my prayers - my heart aches for her life without you.

Even though my husband and I moved into Mishawaka after you and Bryan were gone, in a short time it has become "our town".

As we come up on 4 years - I will continue to spread the word and let no one else forget!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Over the past several days, I have given this much thought.

I have read some of the reflections on your pages and am moved by most of them. I am especially touched by the people who truly loved you. You are fully aware of who they are.

All any of us have in this physical world is our legacy - what we leave behind once we depart for paradise. Just our legacy - that's it! A legacy is really important. It is a way to live on in the hearts and voices of those we leave behind. Those that we loved and those that loved us.

In reading these reflections, I can see the hurt and turmoil your early death has caused. I am so very sorry! Loved ones against loved ones, cross or angry words, actions that can never be taken back or reversed. These things have marred your legacy and muted the very voices that could be telling your children, grandchildren or perhaps greatgrandchildren what kind of man you were or sharing with each other and others facts about you known only to the select few.

I didn't even know you and I have been telling everyone about you and your memorial. People who knew you and loved you should be able to not only talk about you openly and freely without being criticized, but if they wanted to shout their love for you from the rooftops - what better legacy! Your friends and family (and fiance) should be greatful to have loved you and to have had you loved by so many - not bickering and fighting over "STUFF". To those few, I would say: "You loved him in your own special way just as he loved each and every one of you in his own special way."

Everyone's physical life will go on - except yours. All that is left is your legacy. PLEASE, for Tom's sake, do not let his legacy be marred by human spitefulness. He would not have wanted that - would you?????

Today, I had the most wonderful experience! I had to share it with you because I know you are so proud!

I met the love of my life about 4 years ago and we have been married a little over 3 years. I was born in Goshen and lived all of my life in Goshen and Elkhart. My husband is from Texas (we met on the internet). We bought a house in Mishawaka about 3 years ago. We moved here to "begin again, together". We were just talking last night about how we love this town.

Today, I took my grandson who is almost 1 to your memorial. What a beautiful spot - a fitting testimonial to your service and honor. As we walked up to the memorial there was a lady planting flowers and we said hello. As I strolled up to your memorial, I knelt down to tell him about you and the others that gave your life so that we can walk the streets without fear. I told him about heros and how important it was to be a "man" and remember that everything has a price and these men gave their lives and that we must never take that for granted.

As we walked away, I told the lady how beautiful the memorial was. We started talking and before long we were crying together.

I feel very blessed that someone as wonderful as her is still looking out for you. I want you to know that someone will never ever let anyone forget you . . . that kind of love endures forever and ever!

Thank you for letting me share a few moments of your life through her! I am very greatful!

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand
